Neil Nitin Mukesh Recalls Being Detained in the U.S. Over His Indian Identity

Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh recently shared a troubling experience from his visit to the United States, where he was detained at a New York airport.

Despite holding an Indian passport, immigration officers questioned his nationality, refusing to believe that he was Indian.

The actor, who was in the U.S. for the filming of New York (2009), a movie dealing with post-9/11 racial profiling, opened up about the bizarre incident in an interview with Mashable India.

Neil recalled, “I was detained at the airport. They refused to believe that I had an Indian passport and that I was Indian. They didn’t even let me answer or say anything for myself.”

What started as a routine check escalated into a nearly four-hour ordeal, where he was interrogated without the chance to explain his identity.

The Escalation of the Situation

As the situation progressed, Neil became increasingly frustrated with the immigration officers’ refusal to believe his claims. “After four hours, they came and asked, ‘What do you have to say?’ and I simply said, ‘Just Google me,’” he explained.

This simple yet defiant response took the officers by surprise, leading them to shift from questioning him to expressing curiosity about his background.

They began asking him about his family and legacy, including his father, Nitin Mukesh, and grandfather, the legendary playback singer Mukesh.
