Rishab Shetty to Bring Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to Life

On the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s 395th birth anniversary, the first look of the highly anticipated historical epic, The Pride of Bharat: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was revealed.

Starring National Award-winning actor Rishab Shetty in the titular role, the film is scheduled for a grand release on January 21, 2027.

Shetty expressed his deep honor in portraying the legendary warrior king, stating that Shivaji’s life and legacy have always fascinated him.

A Grand Historical Spectacle

Directed by Sandeep Singh, the film boasts a stellar crew. The music is composed by Pritam, with lyrics penned by Prasoon Joshi.

Acclaimed cinematographer Ravi Varman, known for his work in Ram Leela and Barfi, will handle cinematography, while Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty, famed for The Goat Life and Slumdog Millionaire, is in charge of sound design.

This film aims to be one of the grandest productions in Indian cinema, promising to bring Shivaji Maharaj’s unparalleled legacy to the big screen with utmost authenticity and cinematic brilliance.

Rishab Shetty’s Excitement for the Role

In an interview with Times of India, Shetty shared his thoughts on playing the iconic leader, calling it an ‘honor’ and an ‘immense pride’ to bring the warrior king’s story to life.

He emphasized how rare such opportunities are in an actor’s career, stating:

“Shivaji’s life and legacy have always fascinated me, and there is a deep sense of pride in being associated with such a great historical figure. Opportunities like biopics come only once in a lifetime. As an actor and a performer, I feel that it’s an honor to bring his story to life on the big screen.”

Renowned Costume Designer on Board

Renowned costume designer Ashley Rebello, known for his work in Hum Saath Saath Hain, Ek Tha Tiger, and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, is designing the costumes for the film.

Rebello revealed that he has been conducting extensive research to ensure historical accuracy. In an exclusive conversation with India Today Digital, he spoke about the meticulous planning involved:

“We have a lot of historians on board. Extensive research was involved, including visiting places in Maharashtra to source authentic fabrics. We’re still gathering information, and making sure we get every detail right. I don’t want to make any mistakes – if someone points a finger at me for inaccuracy, that’s it. There’s no second chance.”

Rebello also mentioned that this is his first proper historical film and that striking a balance between historical accuracy and cinematic appeal is a challenge he is eager to take on. He cited filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali as a source of inspiration, stating:

“I think Sanjay Leela Bhansali does this beautifully. He tells real stories about real heroes but presents them in such a glamorous way that people are in awe. That’s exactly the feeling I want to recreate.”

Rishab Shetty’s Other Major Projects

Apart from The Pride of Bharat: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shetty has several other high-profile projects lined up. He is set to portray Lord Hanuman in Prashanth Varma’s Jai Hanuman, the sequel to the blockbuster superhero film HanuMan.

Additionally, he is directing and starring in Kantara: Chapter 1, a prequel to his hit film Kantara, which is scheduled for release on October 2, 2025.
