Thalapathy Vijay Faces Police Complaint Over Alleged Insult at Iftar Event

Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay, widely known as Thalapathy, has found himself at the center of a significant controversy following a police complaint filed against him in Chennai.

The complaint, lodged by the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamaat, accuses Vijay of insulting the Muslim community during an Iftar event. The organization has demanded legal action, claiming that the event was offensive and poorly organized.

Complaint Filed by Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamaat

The complaint was filed at the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office by Syed Ghous, the state treasurer of the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamaat.

Ghous addressed the media following the filing of the complaint, alleging that Vijay’s Iftar event was disrespectful to the Muslim community.

Ghous claimed that the event was attended by individuals who had no connection to Islamic traditions, including “drunkards and rowdies,” which he argued insulted the sanctity of the occasion.

“The Iftar event organised by Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) was attended by people who have no understanding of the religious significance of fasting and Iftar. Their participation was disrespectful and offensive to Muslims,” Ghous stated.

Allegations of Poor Organization and Mismanagement

Ghous also criticized the organization of the Iftar event, accusing Vijay and his team of failing to provide adequate arrangements for attendees. He claimed that the mismanagement caused discomfort and chaos during the event.

“Similarly, the Iftar event was poorly managed, causing distress among the attendees. Vijay’s repeated failure to organise events properly shows a lack of respect for people’s basic needs,” Ghous remarked.

He further alleged that a similar incident occurred during Vijay’s first political rally in Vikravandi, where inadequate planning left many attendees without drinking water, causing some to faint from dehydration.

Ghous argued that the repeated mismanagement reflects a disregard for public welfare.

Criticism of Vijay’s Intentions

Ghous questioned Vijay’s sincerity in organizing religious events, suggesting that his actions were politically motivated rather than a genuine expression of respect for Islamic traditions.

“Despite the incidents at the Iftar event, Vijay did not express any regret or take responsibility. This raises serious questions about whether he genuinely respects religious sentiments or if his participation was merely for political gain,” Ghous added.

Concerns Over Security Measures

Another major issue raised in the complaint was the conduct of Vijay’s security personnel at the event. The Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamaat accused Vijay of using foreign bodyguards who allegedly mistreated attendees.

“People were treated like cattle at the event. Vijay’s foreign bodyguards handled the crowd in an inhumane manner, showing a lack of basic respect for human dignity. Such behaviour cannot be tolerated, and action must be taken to prevent this from happening again,” Ghous said.

The organization emphasized that the complaint was not filed for publicity but to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

“We are not filing this complaint for publicity. We are doing this to ensure that such incidents do not happen again. Vijay must face legal consequences for insulting the Muslim community,” Ghous stated.

Vijay’s Participation in the Iftar Event

The Iftar event was held at the YMCA grounds in Royapettah, Chennai, and was attended by around 3,000 people, including imams from 15 mosques.

Vijay reportedly observed a full day of fasting and participated in the prayers before breaking his fast with the attendees. He was seen wearing a skull cap during the event, and photos and videos from the gathering quickly went viral on social media.

While many praised Vijay for embracing cultural and religious diversity, the backlash from the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamaat suggests that the event may have created more controversy than goodwill.

Vijay’s Political Background and Career

Vijay launched his political party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), last year. His entry into politics has been closely followed, and his actions as a politician are under increased scrutiny.

Vijay’s decision to organize an Iftar event was seen by some as a gesture to connect with the Muslim community ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections.

The controversy surrounding the Iftar event adds pressure to Vijay’s political journey as he balances his acting career and political aspirations.

He had previously announced that he would stop signing films after completing Jana Nayagan to focus entirely on his political career.

Response from the Muslim Community

The complaint highlights the sensitivity of religious events and the potential for political figures to face backlash when such events are perceived as insincere or disrespectful.

Ghous’s statements reflect the deep sense of offense felt by the Muslim community, particularly regarding the perceived lack of respect for the religious significance of fasting and Iftar.

Ghous stressed that Vijay’s actions should have reflected greater awareness and respect for the cultural and religious importance of the event.

He maintained that the organization’s decision to file a complaint was driven by the need to uphold the dignity of religious gatherings.
