CSK Sign South Africa’s Dewald Brevis for INR 2.2 Crore as Replacement for Gurjapneet Singh in IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed young South African international Dewald Brevis for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.

Brevis comes in as a replacement for injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh. With one overseas slot available, CSK managed to bring in the 21-year-old power-hitter to boost their squad.

Although Brevis had a base price of ₹75 lakh during last year’s auction, CSK secured his services for a substantial ₹2.2 crore.

This move is considered a major acquisition for the five-time champions as they look to strengthen their team for the second half of the season.

Rising Star Joins the Yellow Brigade

Dewald Brevis is widely regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in world cricket.

Despite having played only two matches for South Africa at the international level, his talent has drawn comparisons with AB de Villiers, earning him the nickname ‘Baby AB’.

The young right-hander has already featured in 10 IPL games for the Mumbai Indians and also continues to represent them in the SA20 and Major League Cricket (MLC). He has built a strong reputation in T20 leagues across the globe.

Impressive T20 Track Record

Brevis has played 81 T20 matches so far, amassing 1,787 runs with a strike rate nearing 145.

His highest T20 score is an explosive 162. In the ongoing domestic season for the Titans, he has been in excellent touch, putting up consistent performances in both List A and first-class formats.

His form continued in the 2025 SA20 season, where he played a key role in MI Cape Town’s title-winning run.

Brevis finished as the sixth-highest run-scorer of the tournament, scoring 291 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 184.17 — the best among the top 10 run-getters.

A Timely Boost for a Struggling CSK

The addition of Brevis comes at a crucial time for CSK, who are currently placed at the bottom of the points table with just two wins at the halfway mark of the season.

With their batting order underperforming, Brevis’ inclusion is expected to provide the much-needed firepower in the middle order.

His experience in multiple T20 leagues, including the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), MLC, and SA20, makes him a valuable asset. CSK hope that his arrival will help turn the tide as they prepare for a tough upcoming fixture.

CSK’s Second Replacement Signing of the Season

Brevis is the second player CSK have brought in this season as an injury replacement. Earlier, the team had signed Ayush Mhatre, a young Mumbai talent, to replace regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad.

The team will next face arch-rivals Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on April 20, and Brevis could feature in the playing XI.

An official IPL statement confirmed the move, stating, “Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South Africa’s Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.”

A Game-Changing Addition

While CSK face a tough battle to recover from their poor start, the signing of Dewald Brevis offers renewed hope.

With his aggressive batting style and international league experience, Brevis is seen as a player who can make an immediate impact.

As CSK look to climb the points table, fans will be eager to see if the young South African can live up to expectations and provide the spark needed to revive their campaign.
