Veteran Actor Anil Kapoor’s Mother, Nirmal Kapoor, Passes Away at 90 in Mumbai
Bollywood veteran Anil Kapoor’s mother, Nirmal Surinder Kapoor, passed away on Friday evening due to age-related health issues. She was 90.
The Kapoor family matriarch breathed her last at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.
A family source confirmed to PTI, “Nirmal Kapoor ji passed away today at around 5:20 pm due to age-related issues at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. She was admitted to the hospital a few days ago.”
Funeral Set for Saturday Morning
Nirmal Kapoor’s final rites will be conducted on Saturday morning at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai. On Friday evening, Anil Kapoor and his brother Sanjay Kapoor were seen arriving at the hospital in an ambulance carrying her mortal remains.
They were accompanied by Reena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor.
Family members and celebrities from the film industry gathered at Anil Kapoor’s residence in Juhu to offer condolences and pay their last respects.
Remembering a Cherished Matriarch
Nirmal Kapoor was married to late film producer Surinder Kapoor, with whom she had four children—Anil, Reena, Boney, and Sanjay.
She was the grandmother to Sonam, Rhea, Harshvardhan, Arjun, Janhvi, Khushi, Anshula, Shanaya, Jahaan, and Mohit Marwah.
Nirmal and Surinder Kapoor were married in 1955. She was widely respected in the industry and frequently attended Kapoor family celebrations over the decades.
In September last year, Anil Kapoor had celebrated her 90th birthday with a heartfelt tribute online. He had written, “90 years of love, strength, and endless sacrifices. Your presence fills our lives with joy and positivity every day. Blessed to be your child. Happy birthday, Mummy! ❤️”
Bollywood Joins the Kapoor Family in Mourning
Several prominent figures from the Hindi film industry visited Anil Kapoor’s residence following the news of Nirmal Kapoor’s passing.
Sonam Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor arrived together. A video shared on Instagram showed Sonam leaving the residence in her car.
Rani Mukerji, who shares a close bond with the Kapoor family, was also present. She stood by the family during this difficult time.
Janhvi Kapoor came with her sister Khushi Kapoor to mourn the loss of their grandmother. Janhvi was comforted by her rumoured boyfriend, Shikhar Pahariya, during the visit.
Filmmaker Karan Johar, who shares a warm relationship with Anil Kapoor, was also among those who paid tribute. Others who attended included Anupam Kher, Javed Akhtar, Ananya Panday, Jackie Shroff, and Veer Pahariya, Shikhar’s brother.

Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, and Arjun Kapoor were seated in silence beside Nirmal Kapoor’s mortal remains. All three appeared sombre, dressed in dark attire, as they brought her home for the last time.
The paparazzi captured the visuals through the ambulance window, reflecting the deep sorrow of the moment.
Boney Kapoor’s Tribute to His Late Mother
Film producer Boney Kapoor released a heartfelt statement on Instagram, confirming the loss and honouring his mother’s legacy.
He wrote, “Passed away peacefully on the 2nd of May, 2025, surrounded by her beloved family. She lived a full and joyful life, leaving behind four devoted children, loving daughters-in-law, a caring son-in-law, eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a lifetime of treasured memories.”
The message served as a poignant reminder of Nirmal Kapoor’s role as the cornerstone of the Kapoor family.
Final Goodbye
The funeral for Nirmal Surinder Kapoor is scheduled to take place at 11:30 am on May 3 at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai.
