CSK Sign Urvil Patel as Replacement for Injured Vansh Bedi in IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel as a replacement for Vansh Bedi, who has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025 due to a ligament tear in his left ankle. Urvil, 26, joins the squad at his base price of INR 30 lakh.
Bedi’s Injury Ends His IPL 2025 Campaign
Vansh Bedi, acquired by CSK for INR 55 lakh during the mega auction last November, did not get a chance to play a single match this season.
He was on the verge of making his debut in the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru but suffered the injury moments before the match. Deepak Hooda replaced him in the final XI.
With Bedi sidelined for the season, CSK quickly brought in Urvil Patel as a like-for-like substitute.
Urvil Patel: A Domestic Standout
Urvil Patel came into the spotlight after a dominant display in the 2024–25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He scored 315 runs in just six innings, maintaining an average of 78.75 and a strike rate nearing 230.
He was also the leading six-hitter in the tournament with 29 maximums, despite Gujarat not making it to the knockout stage. Rajat Patidar followed him with 27 sixes across ten matches.
In a standout performance against Tripura in Indore, Urvil smashed a 28-ball hundred — the joint second-fastest century in T20 history — shortly after going unsold in the IPL 2025 auction. His explosive knock turned heads across the cricketing fraternity.
Previous IPL Stint and T20 Record
This marks Urvil’s second association with the IPL. He was part of the Gujarat Titans squad in IPL 2023 but did not feature in any matches.
Despite being uncapped in the league, he has played 47 T20 matches, amassing 1162 runs at a strike rate of 170.38, including two centuries and four fifties.
Call-Up to CSK and Mid-Season Trial
After CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament with an elbow injury, Urvil Patel and 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre were invited to the CSK camp for a mid-season trial.
While Mhatre was later added to the main squad, Urvil’s signing came after Bedi’s exit. He now joins Mhatre, CSK’s youngest-ever player, in the main squad.
Rising Star Across Formats
Urvil’s form extended into the Ranji Trophy as well. Earlier this year, he scored a career-best 140 off 197 balls in the quarter-final against Saurashtra in Rajkot, showcasing his ability to succeed across formats.
His wicketkeeping skills and aggressive approach at the top make him a well-rounded addition to the CSK setup.
CSK’s Struggles and Rebuilding Phase
CSK have had a challenging IPL 2025 season, both in terms of results and injuries. They were the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention, managing only two wins from 11 games and currently sitting at the bottom of the points table.
With three games remaining, CSK is expected to focus on grooming young talent like Urvil Patel as they look to rebuild for the next season.
Third Injury Replacement for CSK
Urvil is the third player CSK have brought in this season as an injury replacement. Earlier, Ayush Mhatre came in for Gaikwad, while South Africa’s Dewald Brevis was signed to replace pacer Gurjapneet Singh.
These changes reflect CSK’s ongoing effort to strengthen their squad depth amidst a disappointing campaign.
Looking Ahead
With Urvil Patel now in the CSK squad, the team may hand him his maiden IPL cap in the remaining matches.
His inclusion not only adds firepower to the lineup but also gives CSK a chance to evaluate new talent as they plan ahead for IPL 2026.
