MI’s Corbin Bosch Shines with the Bat Before Suffering Concussion Against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025

Mumbai Indians all-rounder Corbin Bosch was hit on the head during the IPL 2025 clash against Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, 6th May.
The South African cricketer, who played a critical role in rescuing MI’s innings, sustained a concussion after a bouncer from pacer Prasidh Krishna struck his helmet in the final over.
Bosch’s Key Innings Under Pressure
Corbin Bosch walked out to bat at number eight when Mumbai Indians were reeling at 123 for 7.
The team was in deep trouble after a middle-order collapse. Bosch looked composed at the crease and played some exquisite strokes, aiming to lift his team to a competitive total.
He particularly attacked in the final over, smashing Prasidh Krishna for two consecutive sixes.
His late flourish helped MI post a respectable 155 on the board. Bosch’s quickfire 27 off 22 balls, which included one boundary and two sixes, came at a crucial time, giving Mumbai hope in a must-win encounter.
Blow to the Helmet Raises Concerns
After the two sixes, Krishna responded with a sharp short delivery that climbed awkwardly on Bosch.
Attempting a pull shot on the front foot, Bosch missed it entirely and took the ball flush on the helmet. The impact looked serious and immediately prompted the physio to run onto the field.
Though Bosch continued to bat after being attended to, he was run out on the very next delivery. Following his dismissal, he did not return to the field.
It was later confirmed that Bosch had suffered a concussion, and Mumbai Indians decided to bring in Ashwani Kumar as his replacement in accordance with concussion protocols.
Ashwani Kumar Makes an Immediate Impact
Ashwani Kumar, a left-arm pacer, was drafted in as the concussion substitute and became the 13th player used in MI’s playing XI during the match. Earlier, Karn Sharma had come in as the Impact Player for Rohit Sharma.
Ashwani justified his inclusion by delivering a vital breakthrough for his side. He dismissed Jos Buttler, who was looking dangerous and had formed a strong partnership with Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill.
Ashwani’s spell brought Mumbai Indians back into the contest after Buttler’s dismissal halted the Titans’ momentum.
Before rain interrupted play, Ashwani bowled three overs, conceding just 21 runs. His controlled bowling under pressure was crucial as Gujarat Titans were slightly ahead by 8 runs on the DLS method at the time of the rain break.
Middle-Order Collapse for Mumbai Indians
Earlier in the innings, Mumbai Indians suffered a dramatic collapse. After a solid partnership of 71 runs between Will Jacks (53) and Suryakumar Yadav (35), wickets fell rapidly. Once both set batters were dismissed, MI lost four wickets for just 26 runs.
The score quickly slumped to 123/7 by the 17th over following the departure of Naman Dhir, who contributed only seven runs. It was at this point that Corbin Bosch stepped in and revived the innings with his power hitting in the final over.
Final Over Drama and Concussion Protocol Activation
In the 20th over, Bosch’s back-to-back sixes off Prasidh Krishna had briefly changed the course of the innings. However, the third ball of the over brought disaster, as the bouncer from Krishna hit him squarely on the helmet.
Despite receiving treatment and staying on to bat momentarily, Bosch displayed signs of concussion during the innings break.
Following medical assessment, Mumbai Indians decided to follow protocol and brought in Ashwani Kumar as a like-for-like replacement for Bosch. The substitution proved to be a critical decision in a closely contested match.
A Crucial Swap in a High-Stakes Game
Corbin Bosch’s 27-run knock and subsequent concussion led to Ashwani Kumar stepping in and swinging the game back momentarily in Mumbai’s favour with his bowling.
As rain loomed large, the fate of the match could ultimately be decided by the DLS method, with Gujarat Titans narrowly ahead.
The incident underlines the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket and the growing importance of protocols like concussion substitutes in modern-day sport.
