Chelsea Clinch UEFA Conference League Title with 4-1 Win Over Real Betis, Marking First Trophy of Boehly Era

Chelsea have claimed their first major silverware under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital by winning the UEFA Conference League. The 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the final came just days after securing their Champions League return.

Early Pressure and Setback

Despite being heavy favourites to win the tournament due to their substantial resources, Chelsea found themselves behind early in the game.

Real Betis took a deserved lead in the ninth minute through Abde Ezzalzouli. The Spanish side’s fast start posed a real challenge to the Premier League giants.

Cole Palmer Flips the Game

However, Cole Palmer proved instrumental in turning the match around. The England international, who stood out even during Mauricio Pochettino’s troubled season and shone under Enzo Maresca before fading later in the campaign, delivered two exceptional assists within five minutes.

The first was a perfect cross that set up Enzo Fernández for a close-range header. Moments later, Palmer turned and sent in another precise ball for Nicolas Jackson, who calmly scored at the near post.

“I was sick of getting the ball and going backwards and sideways, I thought when I next get the ball I’m going to go,” Palmer said after the match.

“The first one, there was a bit of space and I saw Enzo running at it so put it over the top. [Second one] same again, I saw Jackson so I crossed.”

Late Goals Seal the Victory

Chelsea’s dominance continued in the second half. Substitute Jadon Sancho scored a fine goal with his right foot, and Moisés Caicedo added a fourth in stoppage time. But the defining moments belonged to Palmer, whose contributions changed the momentum of the match.

A Milestone for the Boehly Era

Although Boehly and Clearlake did not invest over £1 billion to win Europe’s third-tier competition, this victory represents a starting point.

By lifting the Conference League trophy, Chelsea have now won every club competition available to European teams.

The club last achieved a similar feat in 2022, completing the full set by winning the Club World Cup.

That triumph marked the end of Roman Abramovich’s reign, during which the club frequently defied the notion that stability was essential to success.

Massive Overhaul, Renewed Ambitions

Since the ownership change, Chelsea have seen a complete transformation. A near-total overhaul of the squad has taken place, with expensive, long-term contracts.

Their methods have drawn scrutiny, and critics questioned whether silverware would follow such upheaval.

The Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool raised doubts, but this win signals progress. “Hopefully it can be a starting point,” said manager Enzo Maresca. “To build a winning mentality, you need to win games, you need to win competitions and for sure the trophy we won tonight is going to make us better.

But also I am very proud of the path and the journey we had in the Premier League, for me is it the most difficult competition in the world. You have to be consistent for 38 games and these players they showed it.”

Personal Victory for Maresca

For Maresca, the win carried personal significance. A former Sevilla player, he was jeered by Betis fans.

Across the dugout stood Manuel Pellegrini, who had once coached him at Malaga and worked alongside him at West Ham United. “He’s like my professional Dad,” Maresca said before the match.

Maresca made tactical changes that helped seal the win, bringing on Reece James for Malo Gusto at halftime and later replacing Pedro Neto with Sancho. He later defended his decision to bench James initially as a precaution due to his injury record.

Palmer’s Stage

Despite only scoring one goal in his last 23 competitive games — a penalty — Palmer thrived on the big occasion. He dictated the tempo and changed the game with flair and precision.

As the final whistle blew, Maresca embraced Palmer, acknowledging the player’s pivotal role in the win. The team now looks ahead to the Club World Cup and their return to the Champions League, with confidence and momentum on their side.
