Launch Event Held at Indian Embassy in Madrid
The official unveiling of Amul milk in Spain took place at the Embassy of India in Madrid.
The event was graced by H.E. Dinesh K Patnaik, India’s Ambassador to Spain, and D. Fernando Heredia Noguera, Deputy Director for International Relations and Community Affairs at Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
Ricardo Delgado Vizcaíno, President of COVAP, also attended, along with senior officials from Amul and their Spanish distribution collaborators.
Global Dairy Giant Enters European Market
Amul, owned by 3.6 million dairy farmers, is the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative.
It processes more than 12 billion litres of milk annually and operates 112 dairy plants across India with a combined milk handling capacity of 42 million litres per day.
Recognised as the world’s strongest dairy brand and India’s leading consumer products group, Amul boasts an annual turnover exceeding USD 11 billion.
According to IFCN rankings, Amul is also the eighth-largest milk processor in the world. This latest move marks Amul’s entry into the European fresh milk market for the first time.
COVAP: A Key Partner in Spain’s Dairy Sector
Founded in 1959 in Pozoblanco, Córdoba, COVAP is one of Spain’s foremost first-tier cooperatives. With more than 2,000 active farmer-members, it plays a vital role in Andalusia’s agri-food sector.
Its cutting-edge dairy plant processes over 400 million litres of milk annually and exports to more than 30 countries, including the US, UK, and markets in Asia.
Strategic Rollout Plan for Amul Milk in Spain and Portugal
Amul milk will first be introduced in Madrid and Barcelona. This will be followed by launches in other cities including Malaga, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, Córdoba, and Lisbon in Portugal.
Future plans involve expanding to Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, with more Amul products being introduced in these countries.
Amul MD Expresses Pride in Cooperative Partnership
Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul, expressed his appreciation for the partnership: “We are very honoured and pleased to enter an association with COVAP, a very respected Spanish dairy cooperative. This association will ensure all our Spanish consumers will be nourished and energized with the goodness of Amul Milk.”
He highlighted that this marks the debut of Amul fresh milk in Europe and aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to globalise the Amul brand.
“It is our great pleasure to bring the taste of India to the world. We at Amul are confident that in 2025, the International Year of Cooperatives as declared by the United Nations, our team will bring the brand Amul closer to every Indian across the world and showcase the power of cooperation between cooperatives,” he added.
COVAP President Welcomes Mutual Growth
COVAP President Ricardo Delgado Vizcaíno also emphasised the significance of the collaboration.
“This partnership with Amul allows us to work with another cooperative to help them grow their brand in Spain, benefitting not only our own dairy farmer members, but those in India as well.
The collaboration brings together COVAP technology capabilities and high-quality milk with the Amul brand’s rapidly growing and well-known, international reputation for premium dairy products,” he stated.
Amul’s Global Expansion Continues
Amul milk had initially entered the US market and has now expanded to more than 35 states. It is available in both Indian grocery outlets and mainstream retail chains like Costco.
The new venture with COVAP reflects Amul’s continued international expansion and commitment to bringing Indian dairy excellence to consumers around the world.
