Prominent industrialist and Karisma Kapoor’s ex-husband, Sunjay Kapur, passed away at the age of 53 after suffering a sudden heart attack during a polo match in the UK on June 12.
Just hours before his death, he had expressed his condolences for the victims of the Air India crash on social media. His unexpected demise has left many shocked, especially given his recent reflective posts.

Sunjay’s recent activity on X (formerly Twitter) gained attention after his death. On June 9, he shared a motivational post captioned, “Progress demands bold choices, not perfect conditions,” using the hashtag #MondayMotivation.
The post read, “Your time on Earth is limited. Leave the ‘what ifs’ to the philosophers and instead dive headfirst into the ‘why nots.’ Progress demands bold choices, not perfect conditions.”
Then, on the morning of June 12, he shared a final post, reacting to the Air India tragedy.
He wrote, “Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected. May they find strength in this difficult hour. #planecrash.” This condolence message became his last public statement before his sudden passing.
Details of His Death During Polo Match
According to sources, Sunjay was playing a match at Guards Polo Club when he began feeling unwell and requested to stop. He then left the field but soon suffered a heart attack and died.
It was later reported that he had swallowed a bee, and the sting in his throat triggered the cardiac event. Sunjay was playing for his own team, Aureus, against Sujan, a team owned by hotelier Jaisal Singh.
A Multifaceted Life in Business and Polo
Sunjay Kapur was known not just for his personal relationships but also for his achievements. He was the chairman of Sona Comstar, a company that manufactures parts for electric vehicles.
He was also a passionate polo player and actively ran his own team. His recent X posts, especially the one offering condolences for the Air India crash victims, went viral after his passing.
He first gained widespread public attention when he married actress Karisma Kapoor in 2003. The couple divorced in 2016. Before Karisma, Sunjay had been married to designer Nandita Mahtani.
He later married former model Priya Sachdev, with whom he had a son, Azarias. He also co-parented Priya’s daughter from a previous marriage. Sunjay and Karisma had two children together, Samaira and Kiaan.

According to Forbes, Sunjay’s net worth at the time of his death was $1.2 billion (Rs 10,300 crore), placing him as the 2703rd wealthiest individual in the world.
His publicly listed company was recently valued at Rs 40,000 crore. Sona Comstar produced auto parts for seven of the top ten global car companies and played a major role in the electric vehicle sector.
The company was originally founded in 1997 by his father, Surinder Kapur. After his father’s death in 2015, Sunjay took over as Managing Director. Sona Comstar now operates factories in countries including India, China, Mexico, Serbia, and the US.
In a recent interview, Sunjay shared that he had written a 10-year personal and professional plan, as he was no longer involved in day-to-day operations.
Apart from business, he was involved in various roles such as being on the board of Doon School, chairing the northern region of CII, running his polo team, and working with think tanks and leadership forums.
Friends and Community Mourn His Loss
Shalini Passi, a close family friend, expressed her sorrow in an interview with Hindustan Times. She remembered Sunjay as a vibrant person full of energy and someone who was admired by many.
Recalling their last conversation, she said, “Sunjay and Priya congratulated me on the success of Fabulous Lives Vs Bollywood Wives. They were happy to see me holding up for Delhi in the series. Both of them were delighted by it and were happy for me. And that’s what they had expressed to me.”
Shalini added that their families had been close for years, and she often met Sunjay and Priya during their visits to Delhi. Offering her condolences, she said, “My heartfelt condolences to them.”
