Singhvi Slams Zohran Mamdani, Says His Remarks Spare Pakistan’s PR Team the Effort

Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi strongly criticised Zohran Mamdani, an Indian-origin candidate in the New York City mayoral race, following Mamdani’s victory in the Democratic primary.

Singhvi’s sharp remarks come amid growing debates around Mamdani’s political views and identity.

“When Zohran Mamdani opens his mouth, Pakistan’s PR team takes the day off. India doesn’t need enemies with ‘allies’ like him shouting fiction from New York,” Singhvi stated on X.

His post referred to Mamdani’s previous statements, which have been seen as critical of Indian leadership, especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Zohran Mamdani’s Rise and Political Background

Zohran Mamdani, currently serving as a New York State Assemblyman from Queens, made headlines after defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary.

The 33-year-old is known for his affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America and has gained significant support among progressive circles in New York.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, on October 18, 1991, Mamdani moved to New York with his parents at the age of seven.

His mother, Mira Nair, is an acclaimed Indian filmmaker, and his father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a respected academic of Indian-origin Ugandan descent. Mamdani is married to Brooklyn-based Syrian-born artist Rama Duwaji.

If elected in November, Mamdani will become New York City’s first South Asian and Muslim mayor.

Kangana Ranaut Joins the Criticism

BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut also targeted Mamdani, questioning his cultural and religious identity.

In a social media post, she remarked, “His mother is Mira Nair, one of our best filmmakers, Padma Shri, a beloved and celebrated daughter born and raised in great Bharat based in New York.

She married Mahmood Mamdani (Gujarati origin), a celebrated author, and obviously son is named Zohran, he sounds more Pakistani than Indian.”

Ranaut went further, expressing concern over what she sees as Mamdani’s disregard for his Hindu identity and alleging his stance is aimed at “wiping out Hinduism.”

Mamdani’s Mayoral Victory and Upcoming Challenges

Zohran Mamdani declared victory over Andrew Cuomo, dealing a significant blow to the once-powerful former governor.

With a commanding lead in New York City’s ranked-choice voting system, Mamdani is now preparing for the next hurdle: the general election, where he will face incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, a Republican challenger, and possibly Cuomo again.

Though the final results are pending, Mamdani’s likely victory reflects a political shift among Democrats toward more progressive and left-leaning candidates, especially after the party’s loss to Donald Trump in the last presidential election.

Trump’s Harsh Criticism of Mamdani

Former US President Donald Trump also launched an attack on Mamdani, calling him a “100% Communist Lunatic.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani… is on his way to becoming Mayor.”

Trump further criticised Mamdani’s appearance and speaking style, describing him as “not very smart,” while mocking his association with left-wing politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Chuck Schumer.

He concluded, “With our future Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani… our Country is really screwed.”

Policy Proposals and Public Attention

Despite the criticism, Mamdani’s progressive policy proposals have attracted significant public interest.

His campaign focuses on addressing New York’s housing crisis, promising to freeze rents for stabilised tenants and push for affordable housing construction.

He has also pledged to make city buses permanently fare-free and improve public transit infrastructure.

Mamdani’s views on international issues, particularly his pro-Palestine and anti-Israel stance, have drawn both support and criticism, adding to the controversy surrounding his mayoral bid.
