Paranormal Investigator Dan Rivera Dies Mysteriously During Annabelle Doll Tour in Gettysburg

Dan Rivera, a 54-year-old paranormal investigator and U.S. Army veteran, died suddenly while touring with the allegedly haunted Annabelle doll.

His death occurred during a sold-out stop on the “Devils on the Run Tour” in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR), which organized the tour, confirmed the news.

Final Tour Stop in Gettysburg

Rivera had just completed a three-day sold-out tour at the Soldiers National Orphanage, hosted by Ghostly Images of Gettysburg Tours.

Firefighters and emergency medics were dispatched to his hotel on Sunday evening following a report of CPR in progress. By the time responders arrived, Rivera had already died.

The exact cause of death is currently unknown. However, the Adams County Coroner’s Office stated that the death did not appear suspicious, and Rivera was found alone in his hotel room. An investigation remains ongoing.

Paranormal Legacy and Media Work

Dan Rivera had built a notable reputation in the paranormal community.

He had appeared as an investigator on the Travel Channel’s “Most Haunted Places” and worked as a producer for other projects, including Netflix’s “28 Days Haunted.”

Rivera was on tour with other NESPR members, bringing Annabelle to various locations across the U.S.

The Annabelle doll, which was once given to a Connecticut nursing student named Donna in the 1970s, has long been linked to terrifying supernatural claims.

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren alleged the doll could move on its own, follow people, and exhibit violent behavior, including stabbing a police officer and causing a priest’s car crash.

Haunted Origins of Annabelle

The Warrens believed the doll was possessed by the spirit of a dead six-year-old girl named Annabelle and claimed it was demonically inhabited.

The doll was eventually moved to the Warrens’ Occult Museum in Connecticut. The eerie tale inspired the horror movie The Conjuring and several spin-offs in the same franchise.

Earlier this year, conspiracy theorists falsely linked the doll to a prison breakout and fire in Louisiana. Experts later dismissed these claims, confirming that Annabelle had remained secure and never “out of control.”

Rivera’s Final Moments and Safety Precautions

During the Gettysburg event, Rivera explained to attendees how Lorraine Warren had taught methods to protect themselves from paranormal influences.

“What Lorraine would say to protect yourself … is to close your eyes and envision yourself in a halo of white light,” he shared with participants.

Francis Dutrow of the Adams County Coroner’s Office said that an autopsy would determine the exact cause of death.

According to local scanner records, emergency responders were alerted just after 8 p.m. on Sunday. Rivera was found alone, and bystanders had begun CPR before emergency crews arrived, who then declared him dead.

Tributes from NESPR and Family

NESPR released a heartfelt tribute, stating, “His integrity, creativity and generosity defined him. Dan’s passion for the paranormal was rooted in a genuine desire to educate, help and connect with others – whether through social media, conventions or investigations with local families seeking understanding and peace.”

The organization added that despite the uncertainty of its future without Rivera, it plans to move forward with scheduled events.

“We believe with all our hearts that Dan would have wanted the work to continue – bringing people together, sharing knowledge, and honoring the memory of Ed & Lorraine Warren.”

Family Fundraiser and Personal Remembrances

Dan Rivera’s family launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover his funeral and memorial costs.

The campaign was created by his son, David Rivera, who stated that without a life insurance policy, covering service and after-life care expenses is challenging. As of Thursday morning, the fundraiser had raised $2,768.

David Rivera described his father as “a dedicated father and loving husband,” adding, “He was famous for his work as lead paranormal investigator of NESPR, where he helped countless people out of dark times and brought comfort and a sense of safety to those who needed it, but more importantly, he was my father, a great man who loved deeply and lived fully.”

David also shared personal memories, noting that his father enjoyed working on classic cars while listening to classic rock and old-school hip hop, loved camping, and cherished family time.

“He lit up every room with his smile, kindness and sarcastic witty humor,” David wrote. “He was the pillar of light, strength, and love in our family, and we never imagined losing him so soon.”
