Dhanush Slams AI-Altered Re-Release of Raanjhanaa, Calls It a Violation of Artistic Integrity
The controversy surrounding the re-release of Raanjhanaa with an AI-edited ending continues to deepen. Actor Dhanush has now joined director Aanand L Rai in condemning the move, calling it a violation of the film’s original vision.
Dhanush Speaks Out on Social Media
On Sunday, Dhanush posted a statement on his social media accounts expressing discontent over the AI-altered climax.
He stated, “The re-release of ‘Raanjhanaa’ with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection.”
The actor emphasized that this version does not represent the film he agreed to be part of 12 years ago.
“The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future,” he wrote.
What the New Ending Shows
In the original 2013 film, Dhanush’s character, Kundan, dies after being shot and is taken to the ICU. Zoya (played by Sonam Kapoor) visits him during his final moments.
However, in the AI-altered version, Kundan survives and wakes up, bringing tears of joy to Bindiya (Swara Bhasker) and Murari (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub).
The re-release of the Tamil-dubbed version, Ambikapathy, took place on August 1. Eros International, the production banner, claims the new ending is a “creative reimagining.”
Eros International’s Response to Dhanush
In a statement released on Monday, Eros International responded to Dhanush’s post.
They said, “We would like to respectfully clarify that an Eros representative had engaged in direct communication with Mr Dhanush’s team regarding the proposed revisions, and no formal objection was communicated to us prior the AI-enhanced re-release of Ambikapathy.”
The company added that their intention was not to replace the original but to offer a modern reinterpretation.
“This is a creative reimagining, not a replacement, and is consistent with global industry practices including anniversary editions, alternate cuts, and modernised remasters,” stated Pradeep Dwivedi, Group CEO of Eros Media World.
Director Aanand L Rai Also Criticised the Move
Earlier, director Aanand L Rai had also expressed his dissatisfaction with the altered ending.
“Raanjhanaa didn’t need a new climax. It had heart, and honesty. It became a cult film because people connected to it with its flaws, and imperfections. To see its ending altered without a word of discussion is a gross violation not just of the film, but of the trust of the fans who’ve carried the film in their hearts for 12 years,” he said.
He argued that the decision undermines the artistic integrity of the original film, and stated that no permission was sought from him before the edit.
Eros Cites Legal and Creative Justifications
In its defense, Eros Media said, “We have always valued the contributions of every artist and creative partner associated with Raanjhanaa and Ambikapathy, including Mr Dhanush, lead actor, whose wonderful performance brought Kundan to life in an unforgettable way.”
The company also pointed out its grievances against the makers of Tere Ishk Mein, directed by Aanand L Rai and starring Dhanush.
“What is truly unfair is the continued and unauthorized commercial exploitation of our film’s legacy. As rights holders of Raanjhanaa, Eros has formally objected to this misappropriation through appropriate legal channels.”
They claimed that their objective was to explore how AI could offer new storytelling dimensions while preserving the essence of the original film.
Original vs Altered Climax
The central difference between the two versions lies in the fate of Kundan. In both Raanjhanaa and Ambikapathy, Kundan dies in the original cut.
However, in the AI-modified version, he survives, which fundamentally changes the tone and message of the film.
The original film starred Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker, Abhay Deol, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and was directed by Aanand L Rai.
The story of unrequited love and sacrifice had struck a chord with audiences upon its release in 2013.
The Broader Debate Over AI in Cinema
Dhanush’s statement, much like Rai’s, raises broader concerns about the ethical use of AI in filmmaking.
Both artists argue that using AI to alter finished films could compromise the original artistic intent and set a harmful industry precedent. Dhanush concluded his statement by calling for tighter regulations to prevent such practices in the future.
