Farah Khan Reveals Kamal Haasan Was First Choice for Main Hoon Na Villain

Filmmaker Farah Khan recently shared a surprising memory from her debut film Main Hoon Na.

Speaking during her cooking vlog with actor Shruti Haasan, Farah revealed that she had initially approached Shruti’s father, veteran actor Kamal Haasan, for a pivotal role.

“Kamal sir was my first choice for Main Hoon Na, but then Suniel Shetty played that role. I went to Chennai to his office and narrated the script, and he politely asked me to duck off,” Farah said with a laugh. She did not share the reason for his refusal.

The role in question was the antagonist Raghavan Dutta, who opposes Major Ram in the film’s Indo-Pak peace mission storyline. Eventually, Suniel Shetty took on the character, delivering a performance that became one of the film’s standout features.

The Journey of Main Hoon Na

Released in 2004, Main Hoon Na was a commercial and critical triumph. Directed by Farah Khan, the film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Zayed Khan, Amrita Rao, and Suniel Shetty.

The plot follows Major Ram Prasad Sharma, played by Shah Rukh Khan, as he goes undercover in a college to protect a general’s daughter, while secretly trying to reconnect with his estranged stepbrother.

Set against the backdrop of an Indo-Pak peace initiative called “Project Milaap,” the story blended romance, comedy, family drama, and high-energy action.

The film’s memorable songs, including Tumse Milke and Main Hoon Na, played a significant role in its popularity. Made on a budget of ₹25 crore, the film grossed ₹70.40 crore worldwide.

How Farah Approached Kamal Haasan

Farah recalled traveling to Chennai to personally narrate the script to Kamal Haasan, convinced he was perfect for the antagonist’s role. However, the meeting ended with a polite but firm rejection, leaving Farah both amused and surprised.

At the time, Kamal Haasan was already an established name in Indian cinema, known for his versatility and bold choices. Farah’s anecdote adds a new chapter to the behind-the-scenes stories of Main Hoon Na’s casting journey.

Kamal Haasan’s Recent Work

Kamal Haasan was last seen in the Tamil film Thug Life, which reunited him with filmmaker Mani Ratnam after 37 years. Despite high expectations, the film earned ₹97.25 crore worldwide, falling short of the impact created by their 1987 classic Nayakan.

Currently, Kamal Haasan is working on S Shankar’s Indian 3, which is still in production. The release date for the film has not yet been announced.

Shruti Haasan’s Upcoming Project

During the vlog, Shruti Haasan cooked South Indian dishes for Farah and performed an original song.

The conversation also touched upon Shruti’s upcoming film Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, set for release on August 14. The film will clash at the box office with War 2, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR.

Suniel Shetty’s Memorable Role

After Kamal Haasan turned down the role, Suniel Shetty stepped in to play Raghavan Dutta. His portrayal of the militant leader determined to disrupt the peace process became a defining element of Main Hoon Na’s success.

Critics and audiences praised his performance, noting how it balanced intensity with charisma.

Possible Main Hoon Na Sequel

Nearly two decades later, reports suggest that Farah Khan and Shah Rukh Khan may reunite for Main Hoon Na 2. According to industry sources, Farah has been developing a script under Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan’s production company, Red Chillies Entertainment.

“Farah has come up with an idea for the sequel, and Shah Rukh loves the direction she’s planning to take,” a source revealed. The screenplay is reportedly in progress, with collaboration between Farah’s writing team and Red Chillies’ in-house writers.

A Missed Opportunity with a Lasting Story

While audiences can only imagine what Kamal Haasan’s take on Raghavan Dutta might have been, Farah Khan’s lighthearted retelling of the incident shows that the memory has aged into an amusing behind-the-scenes tale.

For Farah, Main Hoon Na remains a milestone that launched her directing career and created a beloved Bollywood classic.
