Luis Enrique Drops Donnarumma for Chevalier in Major PSG Goalkeeping Shake-Up
Ahead of the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique confirmed that he personally chose to exclude Gianluigi Donnarumma from the squad.
The decision came amid stalled contract negotiations and ongoing transfer speculation. Enrique explained that the club was looking for a “different kind” of goalkeeper, despite describing Donnarumma as “one of the best in the world.”
Donnarumma’s Emotional Response
The announcement did not sit well with the Italian goalkeeper. Taking to social media, Donnarumma expressed his disappointment, calling the decision hurtful.
He stated that he was “disappointed and disheartened” to learn he was no longer part of the group and said he wished for a proper farewell to the fans.
Donnarumma, who joined PSG in 2021, was instrumental in the club’s Champions League triumph and treble-winning campaign in June.
However, with his contract talks stalling, PSG secured the signing of young goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier as the new first-choice option, leaving Donnarumma sidelined.
Agent Criticises PSG’s Handling
His agent, Enzo Raiola, criticised the club’s treatment of Donnarumma and hinted at possible legal action.
Raiola said: “I understand the need to buy a new goalkeeper, but dismissing Gigio after everything he’s done for the club is a huge lack of respect that I will assess with my lawyers. Beyond the fact that it was the coach who made this decision, he also works for the club, and my lawyers and I want to better understand their position.”
Luis Enrique Explains the Choice
Enrique addressed the controversy by clarifying his decision. “Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, without a doubt, and even better as a person,” he told reporters.
“However, this is the life of a top-level footballer, and I am 100% responsible for this difficult decision. If it were easy, anyone would do it. These decisions have to do with the profile of the goalkeeper my team needs.”
He further added that the arrivals of Lucas Chevalier and Renato Marin influenced the decision.
“These are always difficult decisions to make. I can only speak highly of Donnarumma. But we’re looking for a different type of goalkeeper. There’s no more dwelling, no more questions. It’s my decision, which the club supports, and we’re looking for the best solution for all parties involved.”
Manchester City Interest
Reports suggest Manchester City have emerged as favourites to sign Donnarumma this summer. The Premier League side may part ways with Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson, opening the door for the Italian shot-stopper.
Exclusion from the Squad
For Wednesday’s match against Tottenham in Udine, Donnarumma was left out of the travelling squad, with Chevalier and Marin chosen instead.
The omission came as a surprise, especially after Donnarumma’s stellar role in PSG’s Champions League success last season.
Enrique reiterated that his decision was based on the team’s requirements. “I am supported by my club and we are trying to find the best solution,” he said.
“It is a difficult decision. I only have praise for Donnarumma. He is one of the very best goalkeepers out there and an even better man. But we were looking for a different profile. It’s very difficult to take these types of decisions.”
Donnarumma’s Farewell Message
In a social media post later on Tuesday, Donnarumma admitted uncertainty about his future at PSG.
“I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done,” he wrote. “If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me and I will never forget it.”
Captain Marquinhos Pays Tribute
PSG captain Marquinhos also commented on the situation, praising Donnarumma’s contributions.
“It’s always difficult, I’ve been here 12 or 13 years and I’ve seen other players leave. Unfortunately that’s part and parcel of football. Only thing we can say is to give everything to the players until the last minute they are at the club.
“Players come and go but the history will always be here. Gigi is part of the history and we are proud of him. What he pulled off last season was incredible, we owe him a lot. If he goes, a huge thanks to him.”
