Malayalam Actor Rini Ann George Accuses Young Kerala Politician of Sending Offensive Messages
Malayalam actress and former journalist Rini Ann George has accused Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil of sending her inappropriate text messages.
Initially, she avoided naming him, but later her statements drew attention toward the Congress leader. Rini revealed that a political leader invited her to a hotel and when she threatened to complain to his party, he challenged her to do so without fear of consequences.
Addressing the media, Rini explained that she had repeatedly warned the leader and informed senior members of his party, but his behaviour continued.
Despite being questioned several times by reporters, she initially refused to disclose either the leader’s name or his political affiliation.
Public Disclosure of Allegations
Rini’s claims became public after an online interview in which she revealed her experience for the first time. “I came in contact with the politician through social media. His inappropriate behaviour began three years ago, when I first received objectionable messages from him,” she said.
She further added, “I received inappropriate messages from the politician. He invited me to a location to spend time with him. When I told him that I would complain about him, he challenged me to go through with it. ‘Who cares?’ was his attitude.”
According to her, she was not physically assaulted but targeted through messages. “I have not suffered any assault; I only received these messages. But through my friends, I learned that several other women faced harassment, and I am speaking up for them,” she said.
Honey Bhaskaran Joins Allegations
Soon after Rini’s statement, writer Honey Bhaskaran also accused the MLA of similar misconduct. Through a Facebook post, she alleged that the politician repeatedly sent her unwanted messages.
Honey explained that the conversations began with travel-related discussions but later turned uncomfortable. When she realised he would not stop, she decided to ignore further communication.
She also claimed that she later learned from Youth Congress members that Rahul Mamkootathil had spoken badly about her, portraying her as the one who initiated the exchange.
“People also need to know the psycho in you who goes out there and talks to women and portrays their conversations as bad among perverts. That’s what this post is for,” Honey wrote.
She further alleged that several women from within the Youth Congress had made similar complaints, yet no action was taken against him.
Who is Rini Ann George?
Before entering the Malayalam film industry, Rini worked as a journalist with multiple agencies in Kerala.
According to her LinkedIn profile, she worked in journalism between 2017 and 2020 after completing her Master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Madras.
In cinema, she appeared in the Guinness Pakru-led film 916 Kunjoottan, where she played a supporting role alongside actors like Tini Tom, Rakesh Subramanian, Dayyana Hameed, and Niya Varghese.
Rini’s Stand on the Issue
Rini maintained that she decided to speak publicly not just for herself but for other women who may have faced similar harassment. “I want to ask which woman these politicians, who were unable to protect the women in their family, will protect?” she questioned.
She stressed that despite being aware of the allegations, party leadership allowed the accused leader to continue enjoying opportunities.
“I decided to speak as I saw recently on social media that many women have faced similar issues. None of these women are speaking a word about it. So I thought of speaking for all,” she said.
Political Fallout
Although Rini did not directly name the politician at first, protests soon broke out. The BJP staged a march toward the office of Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, demanding his resignation.
Mamkootathil, who also serves as the Youth Congress state president, faced growing scrutiny following the accusations.
Opposition Leader VD Satheesan responded to the controversy, stating that the party had only now received an official complaint. He assured that appropriate action would be taken against the accused, “whoever it is.”
Growing Pressure
The allegations by both Rini Ann George and Honey Bhaskaran have sparked widespread debate in Kerala’s political and cultural circles.
With two public figures stepping forward, questions have been raised about accountability within political organisations and the treatment of women who report harassment.
While Rini has clarified that she did not suffer physical assault, her claims, combined with Honey Bhaskaran’s testimony, have intensified demands for a fair investigation.
The issue continues to draw attention, highlighting concerns about power, politics, and the safety of women in public life.
