Apple Names Sabih Khan as New COO in Leadership Transition, Succeeding Jeff Williams

Sabih Khan, a veteran Indian-American executive at Apple Inc., has been named the company’s new Chief Operating Officer (COO).

He will step into the role later this month, succeeding Jeff Williams, who will remain with Apple until his retirement later this year.

Currently serving as Apple’s Senior Vice President of Operations, Khan has spent nearly three decades with the company. His elevation to the COO role marks a significant leadership transition at the tech giant.

Tim Cook Praises Khan’s Strategic Vision

Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged Khan’s immense contributions over the years, stating that Khan has been “one of the central architects of Apple’s supply chain.”

Cook added, “Sabih leads with heart and values, and I know he will make an exceptional chief operating officer. He helped ensure that Apple can be nimble in response to global challenges.”

Khan has been instrumental in pioneering Apple’s shift toward sustainability, introducing advanced manufacturing techniques, and expanding production capabilities in the United States.

Cook also credited him with helping reduce Apple’s carbon footprint by more than 60 percent.

Background and Education

Born in 1966 in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, Khan moved to Singapore at the age of 10.

He pursued dual undergraduate degrees in economics and mechanical engineering at Tufts University, followed by a master’s in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Khan began his career at GE Plastics, now known as SABIC, where he worked as an applications development engineer and key account technical leader.

He joined Apple in 1995 as part of its procurement group, embarking on a long and influential journey with the company.

Khan’s Role and Responsibilities

Over the years, Khan has been responsible for shaping Apple’s global supply chain and operations. His portfolio includes product planning, procurement, manufacturing, logistics, and product fulfillment.

He also leads Apple’s supplier responsibility programs, which focus on protecting and educating workers at manufacturing sites worldwide.

In 2019, he was promoted to Senior Vice President of Operations. Since then, he has guided efforts to strengthen supplier relationships, boost green manufacturing practices, and streamline Apple’s operational efficiency.

His leadership will be critical as Apple navigates increasing pressure to shift more of its manufacturing to the United States amid global trade tensions.

Transition from Jeff Williams

Jeff Williams, Apple’s current COO, will continue overseeing the Apple Watch and design teams until his retirement later in the year.

Williams expressed confidence in Khan, stating, “I think he’s the most talented operations executive on the planet. I have tremendous confidence in Apple’s future under his leadership in this role.”

The leadership change has been described by Apple as part of a long-planned succession strategy.

Khan and Williams have worked closely together for 27 years, making this transition a well-prepared move for the company’s future direction.

Apple Faces Ongoing Market Challenges

Khan steps into the COO position at a time when Apple is confronting multiple external challenges.

These include political pressure from the U.S. government to increase domestic manufacturing and backlash over the delayed rollout of the generative AI-enhanced Siri for iPhone 16 users.

With his deep experience in operations and supply chain strategy, Khan is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing both logistical and reputational concerns facing Apple in the near term.

Environmental and Technological Contributions

Khan has played a leading role in advancing Apple’s sustainability goals. His work with suppliers has helped integrate cleaner technologies and responsible labor practices across Apple’s vast production network.

This includes overseeing the company’s move toward green manufacturing and environmentally conscious supply chain initiatives.

Apple leadership has emphasized Khan’s ability to align business performance with environmental responsibility, a trait that has become increasingly important for global corporations.

Looking Ahead

As Khan prepares to take over as Chief Operating Officer, his strategic expertise and decades-long tenure with Apple position him as a key figure in the company’s ongoing evolution.

With global operations and sustainability under his watch, Khan’s leadership will be vital in maintaining Apple’s competitive edge and social responsibility standards in a rapidly changing tech landscape.
