Jagriti Yatra: India’s 8,000-Kilometer Journey of Youth, Purpose, and Innovation

Once a year, a unique train departs from Mumbai. This is no ordinary trip for tourists—it is the Jagriti Yatra, a transformative journey designed for young Indians who aspire to create change through innovation and enterprise.

Spanning approximately 8,000 kilometers in just 15 days, this annual initiative brings together over 500 individuals with a common mission: to build India through entrepreneurship and social leadership.

The Beginning of a Movement

The Jagriti Yatra was launched in 2008 by the non-profit organization Jagriti Sewa Sansthan. Since then, over 15 successful editions have been completed.

Thousands of alumni have gone on to start ventures, lead social causes, or become community leaders.

Many participants recall the journey as eye-opening, revealing to them not only the diverse realities of India but also their personal purpose and potential.

The Route and Purpose

The train travels through a variety of Indian landscapes—from urban centers to rural villages—stopping at places where social entrepreneurs and grassroots leaders are working to solve pressing challenges.

The journey introduces participants, known as Yatris, to India’s innovation hubs and change-makers who have built schools, hospitals, businesses, and movements from the ground up.

Schedule for 2025

For the year 2025, the Yatra will begin on November 7 and conclude on November 22. During this time, Yatris will meet inspirational figures across the country.

These interactions are meant to inspire them to create their own ventures aimed at making a positive impact in their communities.

Who Can Apply?

Eligibility is open to individuals aged 20 to 27, with a special focus on those from smaller towns and rural areas, termed “Middle India.” The selection process is designed to ensure diversity—balancing gender, geography, and social backgrounds.

Each year, about 20 international participants also join, contributing a global perspective to the exchange of ideas and experiences.

Application Process

Interested candidates must submit an online application that includes essay-style questions. These responses help over 30 global experts evaluate each applicant’s entrepreneurial potential. Reference checks and brief interviews may also be part of the selection.

There is also a separate application for facilitators, who help coordinate and guide the Yatra. Their selection is based on professional experience and communication skills.

Program Fee and Financial Support

The program fee is ₹1,00,000. However, scholarships are provided to candidates from economically weaker sections to ensure financial constraints do not prevent deserving individuals from participating.

Redefining Travel Through Purpose

Unlike traditional tourism, the Jagriti Yatra integrates travel with personal growth and social empowerment. It demonstrates how travel can be a catalyst for learning, leadership, and development, pushing beyond leisure to foster deeper understanding and societal change.
