Kirti Ganorkar Appointed Managing Director of Sun Pharmaceutical as Dilip Shanghvi Steps into Executive Director Role
India’s leading drugmaker by revenue, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, has announced a significant leadership shift. Kirti Ganorkar, who currently heads the company’s India business, will assume the role of Managing Director starting September 1, 2025.
This leadership transition will see founder and current MD, Dilip Shanghvi, move into the role of Executive Chairman.
While stepping down from the MD position, Shanghvi will continue to chair the board and focus on shaping Sun Pharma’s long-term strategy and expanding its specialty drug portfolio.
Shareholder Approval and Tenure
The appointment of Ganorkar is subject to shareholder approval at the company’s annual general meeting scheduled for July 31. If approved, Ganorkar will serve as Managing Director for a period of five years.
Ganorkar, a chemical engineer with an MBA, has been with Sun Pharma since 1996.
Over his tenure, he has held several key positions within the company, including roles in marketing, business development, mergers and acquisitions, and new product introduction.
A Long Career at Sun Pharma
Ganorkar has led the India business since June 2019, steadily increasing its market share.
He has also contributed to the company’s global expansion efforts, playing a pivotal role in Sun Pharma’s entry into Japan and initiating groundwork for its presence in Europe. Additionally, he supported the US business through leadership in generic drug development projects.
Under his leadership, Sun Pharma took significant steps in the specialty segment, notably securing rights for Ilumya, the company’s first biologic drug for treating moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.
Shanghvi Expresses Confidence in Ganorkar
In a statement, Dilip Shanghvi expressed full confidence in Ganorkar’s capabilities. “Kirti has consistently demonstrated effective leadership managing diverse roles at Sun. I have a firm belief in his ability to lead the company into its next phase of growth and extend my best wishes for his success,” Shanghvi said.
Ganorkar, reflecting on his journey with the company, said, “It has been a profoundly rewarding journey to participate in the company’s transformation into a leading global pharmaceutical enterprise. I’m confident of the continued success of the company.”
North America Leadership Change
Alongside the appointment of Ganorkar, Sun Pharma also announced changes in its North America operations. Richard Ascroft will take over as CEO of the North America business, replacing Abhay Gandhi, who is stepping down after 30 years with the company.
Ascroft, formerly Senior Vice President and Business Unit Head for U.S. Plasma-Derived Therapies at Takeda Pharmaceuticals, will report directly to Executive Chairman Dilip Shanghvi.
Role of Aalok Shanghvi
Aalok Shanghvi, the company’s Chief Operating Officer and a Whole-Time Director, will also assume additional responsibilities by taking charge of the North America business.
Sun Pharma emphasized that the new appointments mark the outcome of a forward-looking and structured succession planning process.
The company stated, “Today’s announcement marks the culmination of a structured and forward-looking succession planning process at Sun Pharma, underscoring the organisation’s commitment to leadership continuity and strategic governance.”
Ganorkar’s Vision for the Future
Speaking on his new role, Ganorkar said, “Sun Pharma is at an exciting juncture with all its businesses well-positioned for growth.
Building on the strong foundation laid by Mr. Shanghvi and ably supported by our global leadership team, I’m confident of continued success of the company.”
With leadership transitions at both the global and North American levels, Sun Pharma is positioning itself for sustained growth and continued innovation in the pharmaceutical industry.
