Kannada Actor Santhosh Balaraj Passes Away at 34 in Bengaluru

Kannada actor Santhosh Balaraj passed away on Tuesday morning at approximately 9:30 am at Apollo Hospital in Kumaraswamy Layout, Bengaluru.

As reported by The Week, the actor died following severe health complications caused by liver and kidney issues, which eventually led to jaundice. He was 34 years old.

Santhosh had been admitted to the hospital nearly a month ago and was undergoing treatment for these complications.

His condition worsened, leading to his re-admission and transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU). According to reports, he slipped into a coma after his organs failed to recover.

Battling Illness and ICU Treatment

Initially hospitalized due to jaundice, Santhosh reportedly showed signs of recovery before being readmitted as his health deteriorated again.

Despite being treated in the ICU, the actor’s condition continued to decline. Medical reports confirmed that the illness had become critical, and he could not recover from the organ failure.

Legacy of a Film Family

Santhosh Balaraj was the son of the late Anekal Balaraj, a well-known producer in the Kannada film industry.

Anekal Balaraj was especially recognized for producing the 2003 hit film Kariya, which starred actor Darshan. Tragically, Anekal passed away in a road accident in 2022.

After his father’s death, Santhosh chose not to marry and lived with his mother. His personal and professional life remained closely linked to his father’s legacy in the film industry.

Entry into Kannada Cinema

Santhosh made his debut in the film industry with Kempa in 2009. This film was an action drama that depicted rural conflict and emotional depth. The project marked his entry into Kannada cinema, with backing from his father.

He later appeared in Olavina Ole (2012), which starred Neha Patil opposite him and dealt with the theme of honour killings.

His next release was Janma (2013). Olavina Ole earned him praise for his sensitive portrayal in a socially intense subject.

Breakthrough with Ganapa

Santhosh received major recognition for his role in the 2015 romantic thriller Ganapa, directed by Prabhu Srinivas. The film’s plot was noted to have similarities with his father’s earlier production, Kariya.

Ganapa became a box office success and brought Santhosh into the limelight. The song Muddagi Neenu, sung by Sonu Nigam, became a popular number from the film.

His rugged presence and intense performances became a hallmark of his acting style. Audiences appreciated his ability to portray action-packed and emotionally layered roles.

Final Performance in Kariya 2

In 2017, Santhosh starred in Kariya 2, a spiritual sequel to the original Kariya. Also directed by Prabhu Srinivas, the film featured Mayuri Kyatari alongside Santhosh.

Kariya 2 opened to mixed to positive reviews. The movie followed the story of a local goon who is eventually killed by his lover, who suspects him of murdering her father.

The film was produced under Santosh Enterprises, a production house associated with his father. Although the movie received mixed reactions, Santhosh’s performance stood out and was well-received.

Personal Loss and Tragedy

Santhosh had already experienced a significant personal loss in May 2022 when his father, Anekal Balaraj, passed away after being hit by a speeding motorbike.

The accident resulted in severe head injuries and proved fatal. This tragedy had a lasting impact on Santhosh, who remained single and stayed with his mother following the incident.

Contribution to Kannada Cinema

Over his career, Santhosh was known for portraying intense characters. Some of his noted films include Kempa, Olavina Ole, Janma, Ganapa, Kariya 2, Berkeley, and Satya.

His ability to bring emotional gravity and authenticity to the screen earned him respect among peers and audiences alike.

Santhosh’s career was deeply tied to his father’s influence, from being launched in Kempa to starring in Kariya 2, both linked to Anekal Balaraj’s vision for Kannada cinema. The actor’s passing marks a significant loss for the industry.

Santhosh Balaraj is survived by his mother. His death brings an end to a brief yet impactful journey in the Kannada film world.
