The music world was shaken on Sunday when Chandramouli Biswas, former bassist of the iconic Bangla rock band Fossils, was discovered hanging in his rented house on Indian Mirror Street, Kolkata.
Biswas, aged 48, was found by his friend, Mohul Chakraborty, lead vocalist of the band Golok.
Mohul expressed his sorrow, saying, “I hadn’t been able to reach Chandramouli on the phone since morning. I grew worried and went to his house with another friend in the afternoon. That’s when we found him hanging from a fan.”
The Kolkata Police registered a case of unnatural death, and preliminary investigations revealed that Biswas had been battling depression for several years due to financial challenges.
Fossils Pays Tribute
The news of Biswas’s death reached the members of Fossils while they were traveling to a performance in Kalyani, West Bengal.
The band’s lead vocalist, Rupam Islam, addressed the audience, stating, “We have performed on this stage 21 times. Out of these, the picture of the person who was with us 16 times is on the screen behind us. When we came here, we received a piece of news that hit us like a thunderbolt. Chandra was my best friend for a long time. We were in touch until last year.”
Biswas had been a part of Fossils from 2000 to 2018, initially joining as a guitarist before becoming the band’s bassist. The band dedicated their performance to his memory, honoring his contribution to their journey.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Chandramouli Biswas was known not only for his work with Fossils but also for his association with bands like Golok and Zombie Cage Control.
Despite being a brilliant engineering graduate from Jadavpur University, Biswas left his technical career behind to pursue his passion for music.
His contributions to the Bangla rock scene earned him a significant fan following, particularly among younger audiences.
Biswas’s struggles, however, were not unknown to his friends and family. According to the police, he had been undergoing treatment for depression.
A suicide note recovered from his residence stated that no one was responsible for his death. The handwriting on the note is being verified as part of the ongoing investigation.
Reflections from the Music Fraternity
Rupsha Dasgupta, the manager of Fossils, shared her reflections on Biswas’s legacy.
“Chandra has a huge fan following among the young crowd. Apart from being a terrific musician, he was remarkably cheerful and socialized with people from all walks of life. It’s shocking to lose him so soon,” she said.
She noted that Biswas had left Fossils in 2018 due to health concerns but remained an integral part of the band’s history.
Mohul Chakraborty, who discovered Biswas’s body, also expressed his grief, stating, “It’s a big loss for the entire Bengal music industry. He was an incredible talent and a wonderful person.”
Lingering Questions and Final Farewell
As the investigation continues, questions remain about what led Chandramouli Biswas to take such a drastic step.
His financial and emotional struggles, combined with his departure from the limelight, likely contributed to his depression.
Friends, fans, and colleagues have called for greater awareness of mental health challenges within the creative community.
On social media, Biswas updated his profile picture just hours before his death, a detail that has added to the heartbreak felt by those who knew him. His parents, who were not home at the time, survive him.
The Bengali music fraternity mourns the loss of a talented artist who left an indelible mark on the industry.
Chandramouli Biswas’s contributions to bands like Fossils, Golok, and Zombie Cage Control will be remembered as an enduring part of Bangla rock history.
