Bruce Willis Receiving Full-Time Care in Separate Home Amid Dementia Battle, Reveals Wife Emma Heming

Bruce Willis, the award-winning action star, now resides in what his family calls a “second home,” where he receives 24-hour care for frontotemporal dementia.

This revelation came in the new program, “Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey – A Diane Sawyer Special,” which aired earlier this week.

The special highlights Willis’ relationship with his wife, Emma Heming Willis, and how their family is navigating life with his diagnosis.

Living Arrangements and Family Adjustment

During the broadcast, Heming Willis revealed that her husband lives separately from her and their daughters to ensure he can receive uninterrupted, around-the-clock care.

According to People, the arrangement also helps minimize disturbances from family activity, as noise can trigger agitation for someone with dementia.

“We’re there a lot. It’s our second home, so the girls have their things there,” Heming Willis explained. She described the setup as both necessary and painful.

A Difficult but Necessary Decision

Heming Willis admitted that deciding to establish a separate living space was one of the hardest choices she has faced.

“It was one of the hardest decisions that I’ve had to make so far. But I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters,” she said, as quoted by Consequence.

“You know, he would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.”

This approach, she added, ensures the well-being of their daughters while still allowing them to spend significant time with their father in a supportive environment.

Health Updates and Emotional Challenges

In her interview with ABC, Heming Willis elaborated on Bruce’s condition. “He’s in really great health overall … It’s just his brain that is failing him,” she said.

She shared that, at times, she catches glimpses of the man he was before dementia. “As quickly as those moments appear … then it goes. And it’s hard,” she confessed with emotion.

Still, she ended on a hopeful note: “I’m grateful that my husband is still very much here.”

The Diagnosis and Public Updates

The family disclosed in 2022 that Willis was experiencing aphasia, and in 2023, they confirmed his diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia. Since then, Heming Willis has consistently kept fans updated about his health through social media.

Her upcoming book, “The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path,” will be released next month. It offers insights into her caregiving experiences and her journey of strength and resilience.

Addressing Criticism and Public Response

After her ABC interview aired on Aug. 26, some criticized the family’s decision for Bruce to live separately. Heming Willis addressed this backlash in an Instagram video posted on Aug. 29.

“What I knew is that by sharing some of our intimate information that we would see these two camps,” she said. “It would be people with an opinion versus people with an actual experience.”

She further noted that caregivers often face judgment. “People with an opinion are quick to judge the caregiver. This is what caregivers are up against. Judgment from others.”

Her daughter, Tallulah Willis, publicly supported her mother, commenting: “I love you so much. We love you so much. Thank you for all you do for us and our family.”

A Home Filled With Love

In the Diane Sawyer special, Heming Willis described why they created this new living space for the 70-year-old actor. “It was one of the hardest decisions,” she repeated, “but I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters.”

She emphasized that despite the circumstances, the home is “a house that is filled with love and warmth and care and laughter.”

This sentiment reflects her commitment to ensuring that Bruce’s environment remains positive and nurturing.

Remaining Strong and Supportive

Heming Willis explained that Bruce remains “very mobile” and that his overall health is strong. However, the most significant symptom he faces is the loss of language due to his dementia.

Despite these challenges, the family continues to prioritize unity, care, and emotional resilience.

By maintaining their presence in what has become their “second home,” they ensure Willis is surrounded by love even while receiving the specialized attention he needs.

Through public openness, caregiving advocacy, and personal strength, Emma Heming Willis has shed light on the difficulties and emotional weight of caring for a loved one with dementia, while continuing to highlight the love that defines their family’s journey.
