The White Lotus Season 3: Murder, Mystery, and Meditation in Thailand

Each season of The White Lotus brings a fresh cast and setting, but one thing remains constant: murder. For its third installment, creator Mike White once again incorporates a deadly element, this time with an even more intense narrative.
Season three unfolds at a White Lotus resort on Thailand’s Koh Samui island.
The premiere opens during a meditation session led by spirituality guru Amrita (Shalini Peiris) with Zion (Nicholas Duvernay), a guest whose mother, Belinda (played by returning star Natasha Rothwell), also works at the hotel after her first-season stint in Hawaii.
Amrita’s guidance helps Zion calm his mind: “Let us calm our chattering monkey minds and find in the silence what is timeless.”
Though the moment seems peaceful, tension lingers—viewers know someone is about to die. Unlike previous season premieres featuring a casket being loaded onto a plane or a body washing ashore, season three begins with gunfire.
A Shocking Start
Suddenly, gunshots shatter the serene meditation. Amrita flees while Zion dives into the water to escape an active shooter.
As bullets continue to fly, Zion prays before a Buddha statue: “Please let my mom be okay. Please.”
Then, in an emotional outburst, he curses the statue. Nearby, a body floats past him, marking the season’s first revealed casualty before the timeline jumps back a week to introduce the season’s ensemble cast.
Cast and Characters
Aimee Lou Wood, who plays Chelsea, describes the scene as gripping: “It was so exciting to read on the page.
The script was like a novel.” Michelle Monaghan, portraying Jaclyn, a famous actress on a reunion trip with two childhood friends (played by Carrie Coon and Leslie Bibb), explains how the opening sets the season’s theme: “There’s a duality between light and dark. It’s immediately clear what you’re dealing with.”
While only one body appears in the premiere’s opening, the barrage of bullets suggests a higher death toll than previous seasons.
Season two ended with Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge) taking down a boat full of enemies before her tragic demise. For now, Zion and Amrita are safe from being the floating corpse, but any other character remains a potential victim.
Potential Murder Victims
Among the cast members, several characters stand out as possible targets:
- Timothy Ratliff (Jason Isaacs): A businessman facing turmoil due to an upcoming Wall Street Journal exposé.
- Rick Hatchett (Walton Goggins): A mysterious guest with a vendetta against the hotel’s management.
- Jaclyn Lemon (Michelle Monaghan): A television star on a “victory tour” with old friends.
- Belinda: Zion’s mother and a returning character whose fate remains uncertain.
- Greg (Jon Gries): Tanya’s widower, who orchestrated her death in season two and now resides at the resort.
Mike White has hinted at a darker season focusing on spirituality. He also teased further exploration into Tanya’s demise and Greg’s involvement, a plotline that Jennifer Coolidge herself advocated: “Greg should get his comeuppance.”
Season Themes and Inspirations
In a past interview, White shared his vision for The White Lotus: “It would be easy to be full-on anthology, but I think it’s more fun to have little threads through the show.” His approach ensures continuity, even as each season reinvents the format.
Season three could be setting up a revenge arc targeting Greg. Will he be the next victim? With seven episodes remaining, the mystery unfolds week by week.

Mike White’s Creative Process
White originally planned to set season three in Japan but switched to Thailand after HBO’s suggestion. During location scouting, he fell ill with bronchitis and was hospitalized.
His sleepless nights in the hospital inspired the season’s storyline. White typically struggles with endings, but this time, his illness-driven reflections helped him map out the plot in advance.
Cast Lineup
Alongside Natasha Rothwell, season three features a talented ensemble cast, including Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Francesca Corney, Nicholas Duvernay, Arnas Fedaravičius, Christian Friedel, Michelle Monaghan, Walton Goggins, Dom Hetrakul, Sarah Catherine Hook, Jason Isaacs, Blackpink’s Lisa, Sam Nivola, Morgana O’Reilly, Lek Patravadi, Shalini Peiris, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Tayme Thapthimthong, Aimee Lou Wood, and Scott Wood.
