The period drama also features Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, Neil Bhoopalam, Santosh Juvekar, and Pradeep Rawat in significant roles.

The Legacy of Sambhaji Maharaj

The trailer highlights Sambhaji Maharaj’s coronation in 1681, marking the beginning of a legendary reign. Vicky Kaushal’s portrayal captures the spirit of a ruler who promised to protect the Maratha Samraj from the Delhi Sultanate.

The powerful dialogue, “Hum shor nahi karte, seedha shikaar karte hai,” reverberates with the emotions of a fearless king.

The period setting comes alive with stunning landscapes and elaborate dance sequences, typical of grand historical productions. The climax scene of Vicky battling a ferocious lion leaves a lasting impression.

The Cast and Their Roles

Rashmika Mandanna shines as Yesubai Bhonsale, a devoted and strong-willed queen. Akshaye Khanna’s Aurangzeb is menacing, embodying the Mughal emperor’s determination to crush the Marathas.

The trailer also teases intense battle sequences, capturing the bloodshed and glory of the bygone era.

AR Rahman’s music further elevates the narrative, and the film is produced by Maddock Films.

The makers shared a poster on January 17, captioned, “On 16th January 1681, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s Rajyabhishek ceremony marked the beginning of a legendary legacy! 344 years later, we bring his story of unshaken courage and glory to life. #ChhaavaTrailer out on 22nd January! Released in cinemas on 14th February 2025.”

Historical Drama with High-Impact Action

Chhava is based on Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel Chhava, chronicling the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The trailer builds tension as the Marathas strive to establish Swaraj while facing the Mughal empire’s relentless opposition.

Akshaye Khanna’s Aurangzeb delivers chilling lines like, “Purey khandaan ki laash par khadey hokar hum ne taaj pehna tha, use dobara usi waqt pehneinge jab uss Sambha ki cheekhein poore Hindustan mein gunjengi.” Meanwhile, the Marathas uphold their belief in Swaraj as divine will.

Directed by Laxman Utekar, known for Mimi (2021) and Luka Chuppi (2019), Chhava is his second collaboration with Vicky Kaushal after the comedy-drama Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (2023).

Vicky Kaushal’s transformation for the role is remarkable. At the trailer launch, he revealed his extensive preparation, which included gaining 25 kilograms, learning horse riding, and mastering sword, stick, and spear fighting over six to seven months.
