26 Bangladeshis Held by BSF for Illegal Entry Near Meghalaya Border

In a significant move to prevent cross-border infiltration, the Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended 26 Bangladeshi nationals in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district near the international border.

Officials confirmed on Tuesday that the arrests were made after it was found that the individuals had entered India without valid documents.

Intelligence-Based Operation Intercepts Vehicles

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, personnel from the 22nd Battalion of the BSF intercepted three vehicles on State Highway-12 near Matchokpara, while they were travelling from Purakhasia to Barengapara on Monday.

An official involved in the operation revealed that the arrested individuals were being facilitated by Indian touts.

“During checking, it was found that the Bangladeshi nationals were being assisted by Indian facilitators in an infiltration attempt. All individuals were taken to custody for questioning,” said the official.

Indian Touts Assist Illegal Entry

Along with the 26 Bangladeshi nationals, four Indian individuals suspected of aiding the infiltration were also detained. BSF officials believe these touts played a key role in facilitating the illegal entry into Indian territory.

The BSF described Monday’s action as a major success in its ongoing campaign against cross-border infiltration and crime along the India-Bangladesh frontier.

“This operation reflects the unwavering vigilance and operational commitment of our personnel in safeguarding national security,” stated a BSF spokesperson.

Meghalaya Sees Rising Infiltration Cases in 2025

According to BSF data, the number of Bangladeshi nationals apprehended in Meghalaya in 2025 has reached at least 46.

Earlier this year, BSF officials detained seven Bangladeshis in East Khasi Hills, five in South Garo Hills, and four each in West and East Jaintia Hills.

The trend points to a persistent challenge faced by the security forces in curbing infiltration through the porous international border.

Further investigation is being conducted in coordination with Meghalaya Police to uncover the full extent of the infiltration network, the BSF spokesperson confirmed.

Odisha Detains Hundreds Suspected to Be Bangladeshi Nationals

In a related development, Odisha’s Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari disclosed that 335 of the 444 people detained in Jharsuguda district on suspicion of being Bangladeshi immigrants were found in possession of fake Indian identity documents.

Pujari, speaking to PTI after a meeting with senior administrative and police officials, asserted that the BJP-led state government would not allow Odisha to become a “shelter home” for illegal immigrants.

“We found that 335 of the 444 people held for verification on suspicion of being Bangladeshis were possessing fake Indian documents. They all have Aadhar card, voter card and other documents showing them as residents of West Bengal,” Pujari said.

West Bengal’s Role Under Scrutiny

The Odisha minister added that these individuals would be handed over to district collectors of the areas they claim to belong to in West Bengal.

He urged the West Bengal government to take appropriate action and alleged a “conspiracy to push illegal Bangladeshis into Odisha from the adjoining state.”

The arrests and verification drive highlight growing concerns among states about the issue of illegal immigration and the use of falsified documents to establish residency within India.

BSF Lauded for Preventing Cross-Border Crime

The BSF’s operation in Meghalaya demonstrates its crucial role in preventing illegal activities and safeguarding India’s border areas.

Their swift action, based on real-time intelligence, successfully disrupted what could have been a larger attempt at organized infiltration.

“The BSF’s prompt action and vigilance prevented the illegal infiltration and showcased their commitment to safeguarding national security,” stated the PRO of BSF Meghalaya.

The success of this operation reflects the larger mission of the BSF to combat trans-border crimes and illegal immigration, especially in sensitive regions like Meghalaya which share extensive borders with Bangladesh.

As the investigations continue, both central and state authorities are focusing on enhancing coordination to prevent such attempts in the future and ensure that national security remains uncompromised.
