Army Soldier Martyred in Fierce Gunfight During Anti-Terror Operation in J&K’s Udhampur
A soldier of the Indian Army’s Special Forces lost his life during a fierce encounter with terrorists in the Dudu-Basantgarh region of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district.
According to the Army, the joint operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs in coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
“Based on specific intelligence, a joint operation with Jammu and Kashmir police was launched today in Basantgarh, Udhampur. Contact was established and a fierce firefight ensued,” stated the White Knight Corps.
One soldier sustained serious injuries during the initial exchange and later succumbed despite receiving medical attention.
The fallen soldier was identified as Havaldar Jhantu Ali Sheikh from 6 Para of the Special Forces.
The Army paid tribute, stating, “GOC White Knight Corps and all ranks salute braveheart Havaldar Jhantu Ali Shaikh of 6 PARA SF, who made the supreme sacrifice during a counter-terror operation.”
Operation Birli Gali and Continuing Gunfire
The ongoing counter-terror operation in Udhampur has been designated Operation Birli Gali. The operation remained active at the last update, with four suspects detained for questioning.
This encounter marks the third such clash between security forces and terrorists in the region within just over 24 hours.
Earlier in the week, another encounter took place in the Tangmarg area of Kulgam district, where terrorists opened fire during a cordon and search operation. No casualties were reported in that incident.
Romeo Force Continues Hunt in Poonch Forests
Meanwhile, in Poonch district, the Romeo Force of the Indian Army and the J&K Police’s Special Operations Group have been conducting a joint operation in the forest areas of Lasana for ten consecutive days.
This operation commenced on April 15, following a gunfight on April 14.
One security personnel was injured during the operation near Lasana village. Authorities have heightened security measures along the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch highway, including 24/7 checkpoints, restricted movement for loaded trucks, and increased inspections of local vehicles.
“We are checking local cars by checking their licenses… Traffic Police, District Police, and the Army are also supporting us,” confirmed officer Ahmed Din.
Indian Army Thwarts Infiltration in Baramulla
In another major development, the Indian Army successfully foiled an infiltration attempt in the Uri Nala region of Baramulla district.
According to the Chinar Corps, two terrorists were neutralised during the operation, and a cache of arms, ammunition, and war-like materials was recovered.
Recent Pahalgam Terror Attack Spurs Strong Response
These series of operations and escalated security measures follow the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow, where 26 people, mainly tourists, lost their lives.
The incident has drawn strong national condemnation and prompted decisive diplomatic action from India.
Diplomatic Repercussions and Cross-Border Tensions
In reaction to Pakistan’s alleged role in sponsoring cross-border terrorism, India has taken several stern measures:
- Suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty
- Closed the Attari Check Post
- Cancelled SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme visas
- Ordered Pakistani personnel to exit India within 48 hours
- Declared Defence and Military advisors at the Pakistani High Commission persona non grata
These moves were decided at a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
