Controversy Over Manmohan Singh’s Funeral: Sukhbir Badal Criticizes Centre’s Decision Amid Calls for Memorial at Raj Ghat

Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed deep disappointment over the government’s decision to hold the funeral of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi.

Badal strongly criticized the move, calling it disrespectful to Singh’s towering legacy and unparalleled contributions to the nation.

A Call for Tradition and Respect

In a post on X, Badal wrote: “Shocking and unbelievable! It is condemnable in the extreme that the Union Govt has declined the request of Dr Manmohan Singh Ji’s family to perform the funeral and last rites… at a place where an appropriate and historic memorial may be built to commemorate his unparalleled services to the nation.”

He emphasized that Singh’s cremation should have taken place at Raj Ghat, a site that holds historical significance as the resting place for India’s eminent leaders. According to Badal, this would have aligned with established practices and traditions.

Opposition Demands Memorial at Raj Ghat

Badal further pointed out the importance of Singh’s contributions, stating: “Dr Manmohan Singh took the country to great international heights. Our political differences with the Congress apart, we have always held Dr Manmohan Singh in the highest esteem as he transcends politics and political affiliations.”

He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and reverse the decision, ensuring Singh’s legacy is preserved appropriately with a memorial at a significant location.

Nigambodh Ghat and Its Historical Context

Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi’s oldest and largest cremation ground, was chosen for Singh’s last rites. However, critics argued that the choice was inappropriate for a leader of Singh’s stature.

Traditionally, Raj Ghat has been the site for memorials dedicated to India’s former Prime Ministers.

Punjab’s Leader of Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa, also appealed for Singh’s cremation at a site befitting his legacy, stating: “Punjabis across faiths and political lines unite in their heartfelt plea to recognize this son of Punjab… ensuring his legacy is honored for generations to come.”

Legacy of Economic Reforms and Leadership

Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 is credited with transforming India’s economy and positioning the country on the global stage.

Despite political differences, leaders across parties acknowledged his integrity, intellect, and service to the nation.

Bajwa highlighted Singh’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming India’s first Sikh Prime Minister, underscoring his immense contributions to India’s progress.

SAD Leaders Voice Disapproval

Senior SAD leader Daljeet Singh Cheema also criticized the government’s decision, stating: “A dignified venue, befitting his stature, should have been automatically designated… Dr. Singh’s immense contributions brought unparalleled progress and global recognition to the nation.”

Cheema urged the government to allocate Raj Ghat or an equivalent site for Singh’s cremation, emphasizing the importance of honoring his legacy in line with tradition.

Criticism from Congress and AAP

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal strongly criticized the BJP-led government for its handling of Singh’s funeral arrangements. Gandhi accused the government of disrespecting Singh, stating: “Manmohan Singh, a great son of Bharat Mata and the first Sikh Prime Minister, was insulted by holding his funeral at Nigambodh Ghat.”

Kejriwal expressed shock, remarking: “Unlike previous Prime Ministers, who were given memorials at Raj Ghat, the BJP government could not even allocate 1,000 square yards for his memorial.”

Government Responds to Allegations

The Union Home Ministry clarified that plans for a memorial in Singh’s honor are underway.

According to the ministry, the process involves forming a Trust and allocating suitable land, which requires time. The BJP’s Sambit Patra accused Congress of politicizing the issue, stating: “BJP believes there has to be dignity in death… Congress should have refrained from this kind of politics on a day of mourning.”

Patra emphasized that the government had communicated plans for a memorial to Singh’s family and Congress leaders, but the cremation arrangements could not be delayed.

Honoring a Statesman

Manmohan Singh’s funeral at Nigambodh Ghat was attended by dignitaries, including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Prime Minister Modi.

Foreign leaders, Congress members, and Chief Ministers also paid their respects. The funeral procession, which began at the Congress headquarters, featured Singh’s body carried in a flower-adorned vehicle with chants of “Manmohan Singh Amar Rahe.”

Sikh priests recited Gurbani as Singh’s eldest daughter lit the pyre, marking a solemn farewell to one of India’s most respected leaders.

Remembering His Legacy

Credited as the architect of India’s economic reforms, Singh’s legacy endures as a testament to vision, intellect, and dedication.

As the nation observes a seven-day mourning period, demands for awarding him the Bharat Ratna echo across political lines. Flags fly at half-mast, honoring the man who reshaped India’s destiny and left an indelible mark on its history.
