Devendra Fadnavis Dismisses Political Speculation Over Raj Thackeray’s Visit to Matoshree on Uddhav’s Birthday
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has urged the public and political circles not to interpret birthday greetings, including those from opposition leaders, through a political lens.
Speaking to the media after offering prayers at the Vitthal Temple in Pandharpur, he said, “We may differ ideologically, but we are not enemies. It is inappropriate to read politics into greetings exchanged on personal or festive occasions. Doing so distorts the cultural values of the state.”
Messages from Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray
Fadnavis’s remarks came a day after the launch of a coffee table book commemorating his birthday, which included congratulatory messages from Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray.
He stated, “Some well-wishers compiled a book for my birthday and sought messages from various leaders. Both Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray offered kind words and good wishes. I appreciate that. But trying to politicise it would be narrow-minded.”
Cultural Tradition, Not Political Signal
Maharashtra minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule also responded to Uddhav Thackeray’s praise for Fadnavis, saying that it reflects the state’s tradition of acknowledging individuals’ contributions on their birthdays.
“It is part of Maharashtra’s tradition to commend the achievements of an individual on their birthday. Uddhavji has appreciated Devendra Fadnavis’s work, his vision, and particularly the roadmap he has outlined for a developed Maharashtra by 2029.
This vision has received a significant boost, and Uddhav Thackeray’s praise is extremely significant, not just for state politics but for all political parties,” Bawankule noted.
Reflections on Saint Namdeo and Current Issues
Fadnavis addressed the public on the 675th death anniversary of Saint Namdeo, highlighting the enduring inspiration provided by the lives of saints.
When questioned about Governor CP Radhakrishnan’s recent comments related to the Marathi-Hindi language debate, Fadnavis said it would not be appropriate to drag the governor into political discussions.
He also refused to comment on the demand for agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate’s resignation, following allegations of him playing online rummy during a legislative council session. “I am here for darshan,” the chief minister responded.
Pandharpur Corridor and Public Involvement
The chief minister said he was open to discussions with locals regarding the Pandharpur corridor development project. The plan includes widening roads, relocating shops, and improving amenities for pilgrims visiting the Vitthal-Rukmini Temple.
On Raj Thackeray’s Visit to Matoshree
Fadnavis also addressed the recent meeting between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray.
He stated, “Raj Thackeray went to wish Uddhav Thackeray on his birthday. It’s a matter of happiness. Why should we view it politically? We also extend our best wishes to Uddhav ji.” This remark came amidst media speculation surrounding Raj Thackeray’s visit to Matoshree on Uddhav’s 65th birthday.
Political Implications and Forthcoming Elections
Commenting on upcoming local elections, Fadnavis remarked, “You saw what’s in the heart of Maharashtra during the Assembly elections. You will see it again in the upcoming local polls. Just because something is in the mind of a leader of a particular party doesn’t mean it reflects the sentiments of all of Maharashtra.”
His comment was interpreted as a subtle response to speculation around the renewed rapport between the Thackeray brothers.
Birthday Bonding: Thackeray Brothers Reunite
Visuals of Raj Thackeray visiting Matoshree were shared on social media by Shiv Sena (UBT), along with the caption, “Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Rajsaheb Thackeray extended birthday greetings to party chief Uddhavsaheb Thackeray.”
This meeting followed a joint rally on July 5, where both Thackeray brothers opposed the alleged imposition of Hindi in Maharashtra.
INDIA Bloc Leaders Send Greetings
Leaders from the INDIA alliance also wished Uddhav Thackeray on his birthday.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi wrote, “Heartfelt birthday wishes and congratulations to Shiv Sena President and INDIA alliance partner Uddhav Thackeray ji. May you stay healthy, live long, and together we will fight for the interests and rights of the people of Maharashtra.”
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin praised Uddhav’s stance on language issues, saying, “Your bold resistance to #HindiImposition and your firm stand to uphold Maharashtra’s identity have united the Marathi people… Wishing you strength as you continue to defend federalism and linguistic dignity.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut shared a poetic message: “Shiv Sena chief, my friend Uddhav Thackeray, who stands firm like a lighthouse in every storm, heartfelt birthday wishes to you! Jai Maharashtra!”
Cultural Values Over Political Interpretations
Fadnavis reiterated that it is essential to maintain the state’s cultural values by not politicising good wishes.
“We are ideological opponents, not enemies. It is extremely wrong to give a political colour to the wishes extended on birthday or any other auspicious occasion. Otherwise it will look like we are promoting an incorrect picture of the state’s culture,” he said.
