Kamal Haasan Faces Backlash Over Tamil-Kannada Remark; Shiva Rajkumar Distances Himself from Controversy

Kamal Haasan’s remark, “Tamil gave birth to Kannada,” made during the Thug Life event in Chennai, has triggered significant backlash in Karnataka.

The veteran actor’s refusal to apologise has intensified protests by pro-Kannada groups, who were seen burning his effigies and posters across the state.

Amidst the uproar, Kannada actor and politician Shiva Rajkumar, initially perceived as supporting Haasan, clarified his stance publicly.

Shiva Rajkumar Distances Himself

Shiva Rajkumar denied that he applauded Haasan’s comment. Addressing the media, he explained that although he clapped during the event, it was not in response to the language remark.

“At the event, I did not understand what was going on. But they’re showing clippings as if I’m clapping for that. I was clapping because he told, he was my chithappa (uncle),” he said.

Shiva affirmed his commitment to Kannada, stating, “All the languages are important to us. But when it comes to the mother tongue, Kannada is the first priority, there’s no doubt about that. I’ve said this before, I can give my life for Kannada.” While he refrained from demanding an apology from Haasan, Shiva underlined his deep respect for the senior actor, calling himself Haasan’s biggest fan.

Kamal Haasan Defends His Statement

Kamal Haasan has stood firm amid growing demands for an apology. In an interview with India Today, he said, “If I’m wrong, I’ll apologise. If I’m not, I won’t. This is my lifestyle, please don’t tamper with it.” He added, “India is a democratic country, and I believe in law and justice.”

Haasan’s response followed a formal complaint filed by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike with Bengaluru Police.

The group, led by Praveen Shetty, sought an FIR against Haasan, claiming his statement hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas and incited discord between Tamils and Kannadigas.

Protests Intensify Across Karnataka

Haasan’s comments have ignited anger among several pro-Kannada groups. Protests erupted in Belagavi, Mysuru, Hubballi, and Bengaluru.

These groups demanded a formal apology, warning of further agitation. Some organisations also called for a boycott of Haasan’s upcoming film, Thug Life, unless he withdrew his remarks.

Legal Action and High Court Petition

In light of the protests, Kamal Haasan approached the Karnataka High Court, seeking protection to ensure the safe release of Thug Life in the state.

The film, scheduled for release on June 5, became embroiled in the controversy after Haasan’s remarks at the audio launch event on May 24.

The petition, filed by Raaj Kamal Films International, argued that Haasan’s statement was made in a spirit of cultural solidarity and had been misinterpreted.

It expressed concern that local police may not offer adequate protection to those involved in the film’s release or to the audience.

Call for Protection and Legal Relief

The petition urged the High Court to issue a writ of mandamus restraining any obstructive measures against the film’s release.

It cited that the film had received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and that any interference would infringe on the petitioner’s constitutional right to conduct business under Article 19, as well as the public’s right to view the film.

It also stated that a ban could result in heavy financial losses and irreparable harm if interim relief was not granted.

The plea further requested that the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) be barred from issuing any directives that might prevent the release of Thug Life in Karnataka.

KFCC’s Warning and Haasan’s Clarification

The KFCC had earlier warned that Thug Life would not be allowed to release in Karnataka unless Haasan issued a formal apology.

In response, Haasan clarified in Chennai that his statement was rooted in affection for the Kannada language. “I think what I said was said with a lot of love. Historians have taught me the language’s history… I didn’t mean anything,” he stated.

A Clash of Sentiments

The issue has escalated from a film event to a major regional language controversy, drawing sharp reactions and legal challenges. As Karnataka braces for the release of Thug Life, the High Court’s decision will be crucial in determining the film’s fate in the state.
