Mohan Bhagwat’s Retirement Hint at 75 Sparks Speculation Over PM Modi’s Future

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s recent comments on stepping aside at the age of 75 have stirred a major political debate.

Many opposition leaders have interpreted the remarks as a subtle message directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will turn 75 in September this year.

Bhagwat made the remark on July 9 while speaking at a book launch on senior RSS leader Moropant Pingle in Nagpur.

He recalled a past RSS event in Vrindavan, where Pingle, upon turning 75, had been felicitated. Quoting Pingle, Bhagwat said, “People started laughing at me when I stand… Because I feel that people are not taking me seriously… you gave this shawl to me at the age of 75, but I know its meaning. When a shawl is draped at the age of 75, it means that you have grown old, just move aside, let us do it.”

Bhagwat further remarked that the event was done with respect, yet Pingle understood the symbolism behind the gesture and was not attached to the pride it brought.

Opposition Reactions: Direct and Personal

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh responded with a jibe on social media, writing, “Poor award-winning Prime Minister! What a homecoming — reminded by the RSS chief upon return that he will turn 75 on September 17, 2025.”

He also pointed out that Bhagwat himself would turn 75 just days earlier, on September 11.

Congress’s Pawan Khera added that both Bhagwat and Modi could “pick up the bag and guide each other.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut accused Modi of earlier forcing senior BJP leaders such as L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, and Jaswant Singh to retire after they crossed the age of 75. “Let’s see if he applies the same rule to himself now,” he said.

Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi echoed this sentiment, saying, “Preaching without practice is always dangerous. It is unprincipled that the Margdarshak Mandal was given compulsory retirement applying the 75 years age limit but indications are clear that current dispensation will be exempted from this rule.”

RSS and BJP Push Back

A senior RSS functionary clarified to The Hindu that Bhagwat’s comments were being misinterpreted.

“Bhagwat ji never said anything on retirement age. He was just quoting one of the instances about Mr. Pingle,” the functionary stated, noting that the speech included several humorous recollections unrelated to politics.

RSS veteran K. Sudarshan, who stepped down at age 78, had previously advocated that senior BJP leaders retire at 75, a proposal aimed at leaders like Advani and Vajpayee. The resurfacing of this sentiment now has rekindled that debate.

No Plans to Step Down, Say Observers

Despite the speculation, many believe neither Modi nor Bhagwat is preparing to retire.

Former swayamsevak and RSS watcher Dilip Deodhar said, “This debate will fade. Bhagwat had clarified five years ago that Modi would be an exception to the 75-year norm.”

According to him, Bhagwat had said in a meeting with columnists, “An exception proves the rule.”

A senior RSS swayamsevak, speaking anonymously, explained that past sarsanghchalaks had only stepped down due to serious health concerns.

He cited Balasaheb Deoras, Rajju Bhaiyya, and K.S. Sudarshan, all of whom resigned due to poor health. He said Bhagwat and Modi remain physically fit and effective in their roles.

Amit Shah on Retirement and Dharma

On the same day as Bhagwat’s statement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also made remarks about retirement.

At a separate event, Shah mentioned his post-retirement interests in the Vedas, Upanishads, and organic farming. However, he did not indicate any plans to retire soon. Shah, who turned 60 in April, is still one of the BJP’s most active leaders.

Previously in May 2023, Shah had said there was no retirement rule in the BJP constitution. “Modi ji will continue to lead till 2029. There’s no truth in retirement rumours,” he had declared.

Political Underpinnings and Power Dynamics

The timing of Bhagwat’s remarks has intensified speculation, especially as both he and Modi were born in September 1950.

A BJP leader, requesting anonymity, suggested the remark might reflect an ongoing power struggle between the RSS and BJP. The upcoming decision on who will become the next BJP president is seen as part of this tussle.

Veteran economist Dr Shrinivas Khandewale observed that while there is no formal age limit for RSS chiefs, the BJP did create a precedent for retirement at 75.

Tribute or Political Message?

Whether Bhagwat’s statement was merely a tribute to Moropant Pingle or a subtle signal to Modi remains uncertain.

However, the comment has reignited the conversation around age, leadership transitions, and the relationship between the RSS and the BJP, just as both leaders approach a milestone birthday in a few months.
