Priyanka Gandhi Slams PM Modi, Cites Trump’s Ceasefire Role as Sign of ‘Irresponsibility’
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused the Modi-led central government of allowing a foreign head of state to announce the India‑Pakistan ceasefire before Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the Monsoon Session’s debate on Operation Sindoor, she pointed to the May 10 ceasefire following the Pahalgam terror attack and asked, “Is it not responsibility of the PM, Home Minister, Defence Minister, NSA to ensure people’s security?”
She blamed the NDA government for multiple security lapses, including the Pahalgam terror attack, violence in Manipur, and the Delhi riots.
She questioned why Home Minister Amit Shah remained in office despite these incidents and pointed out that no resignations had followed the Pahalgam tragedy.
“The terrorists were killed during the attack itself … The Maharashtra Chief Minister resigned, and Union Home Minister too resigned,” she remarked, referencing earlier incidents where ministers accepted accountability.
“And entire Manipur got burnt under Home Minister Amit Shah’s watch, riots happened in Delhi, attack happened in Pahalgam and he is still occupying his post even today. Why?”
Accountability vs History Lessons
Vadra criticized the ruling side for repeatedly bringing up past terror attacks under UPA governments.
“You talk about history, I want to talk about the present … You take responsibility for yourself, you have been in power for 11 years,” she said.
She called out Home Minister Amit Shah for laughing while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh appeared introspective when Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi asked about responsibility in the House.
Responsibility Alongside Credit
She emphasized that leadership requires owning up to failure, not only taking credit.
“He takes credit for Olympic medals too. But leadership is not just about taking credit, responsibility too has to be taken. It happened for the first time in the history of our country that a war stopped suddenly and it was announced not by our Army but by the US President. This is the biggest example of our Prime Minister’s irresponsibility.”
Details of Pahalgam Attack and Security Lapse
Priyanka Gandhi highlighted serious failures in tourist security at Baisaran Valley, Pahalgam.
Quoting the wife of one victim Shubham Dwivedi from Kanpur, she said, “For nearly one hour, when the terrorists were killing tourists, she did not see a single security personnel or a single soldier.” She added, “The country and the government had left us there like orphans.”
She asked why there were no security measures or medical facilities in a place frequented daily by tourists, stating, “They were left in the responsibility of God … they went there trusting this government, and this government left them in the hands of God.”
Questioning Delayed Terror Designation for TRF
Gandhi noted that the terror outfit The Resistance Front (TRF) was formed in 2019, began terror activities in 2020, and carried out 25 attacks by April 2025.
The group killed 41 security personnel and 27 civilians, injuring 54 others. Yet the government only designated TRF as a terror group in 2023. She asked tracking why the designation took three years, saying, “The government was aware of all that.”
She questioned whether intelligence agencies failed to detect an impending attack and asked if any heads had resigned. “IB comes under the Home Minister. Did the Home Minister resign? Forget resignation, did he take responsibility?”
Failure of Diplomacy and Political Evasion
On foreign policy, Priyanka Gandhi argued that Operation Sindoor had failed to achieve its diplomatic goals. She called the government’s evasion of questions a sign of “political cowardice.”
She quoted that most lawmakers in the House had security cover, whereas the Pahalgam victims had none. “No matter how many operations you conduct, you cannot hide behind the truth…”
Reading Victims’ Names Amid Tension
Vadra concluded by reading aloud the names of 25 Indians who died in the attack, urging MPs to acknowledge the victims as human beings.
When Treasury MPs shouted “Hindu”, she countered firmly: “Bharatiya,” emphasizing Indian identity above religious labels.
