Putin Expresses Concern Over Rising Global Tensions, Warns of Growing Risk of World War Three
As tensions between Israel and Iran escalate, Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced deep concern about the growing possibility of a third world war.
Addressing the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Friday, Putin warned that the world was on a dangerous path, with the threat of global conflict becoming increasingly real.
“It Is Disturbing,” Says Putin
When asked whether the world was edging closer to World War III, Putin gave a blunt response. “It is disturbing. I am speaking without any irony, without any jokes,” he stated, according to a Reuters report.
Putin acknowledged that the risk of conflict was mounting and that the current global situation required urgent attention.
“Of course, there is a lot of conflict potential, it is growing, and it is right under our noses, and it affects us directly,” he said. He stressed the need for calm and peaceful solutions to avoid further escalation.
“This requires, of course, not only our careful attention to the events taking place, but also the search for solutions, preferably by peaceful means, in all directions,” he added.
Israel-Iran Conflict Raises Global Fears
Putin’s remarks come as fears of a nuclear disaster in the Middle East grow, particularly following Israel’s ongoing military operations against Iran.
The conflict began on June 13 after Israel launched a surprise offensive, targeting Iran’s nuclear sites, military infrastructure, and top scientists.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has remained firm in his approach. “We will fight as long as necessary to destroy Iran’s nuclear program,” Netanyahu declared, calling Iran’s ambitions an “existential danger.”
Though Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, its uranium enrichment up to 60%—just below weapons-grade—has heightened concerns globally, especially in Israel.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi recently issued a strong warning.
“Countries of the region have reached out directly to me over the past few hours to express their concerns, and I want to make it absolutely and completely clear—in case of an attack on the Bushehr nuclear power plant, a direct hit would result in a very high release of radioactivity,” Grossi cautioned.
Russian Interests in Iran at Stake
Russia has significant stakes in Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Russian specialists are currently constructing two additional reactors at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear facility.
Following a recent phone call with Netanyahu, Putin confirmed that Israel had provided assurances that Russian personnel at the site would not be harmed.
Ukraine War and Middle East Tensions
Putin also cited the war in Ukraine and growing Middle East tensions as reasons for his concern.
He highlighted the need for dialogue to prevent further escalation. “It requires the search for solutions, preferably by peaceful means, in all directions,” he reiterated.
Russia Offers to Mediate
Amid the intensifying Israel-Iran conflict, Putin again offered Russia’s services as a mediator. He pointed to Moscow’s long-standing diplomatic relations with both countries.
“We are not imposing anything on anyone; we are simply talking about how we see a possible way out of the situation,” he explained.
Putin acknowledged that resolving the conflict would not be easy. “But the decision, of course, is up to the political leadership of all these countries, primarily Iran and Israel,” he said. He described the situation as “a delicate issue” but maintained that a solution could be found.
Fears of Broader War
Putin’s remarks come at a time of growing fears that Israel’s strikes on Iranian targets could spark a wider war. There are concerns that such a conflict could draw in regional powers and global players like Russia and the United States.
Russia to Modernise Military
Despite his calls for peace, Putin outlined plans to further modernise Russia’s military.
“We will harness new technology to improve the combat capabilities of the Russian armed forces, modernise military infrastructure facilities, (and) equip them with the latest technology and weapons and equipment,” he said.
In addition, he announced Russia’s intention to expand military and technical cooperation with allied nations. “We intend to develop military-technical cooperation with friendly countries,” Putin stated.
He explained that this would go beyond arms supplies, including joint development, personnel training, and the creation of production facilities.
Focus on Economic Cooperation
Alongside military upgrades, Putin revealed plans to deepen trade and investment relations with partner nations. He emphasised the removal of trade barriers and opening new markets for collaboration.
While Putin advocated for diplomacy and peaceful solutions, his parallel push for military modernisation and stronger alliances reflects Moscow’s determination to protect its interests amid global instability.
