Sonia Gandhi Hospitalized in Delhi, Expected to Be Discharged Soon

Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has been hospitalized at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, according to media reports. She is currently in stable condition and is expected to be discharged by Friday.

The 78-year-old Congress veteran was admitted on Thursday morning, though the exact timing remains unspecified.

Sonia Gandhi’s Health Condition

A team of doctors is closely monitoring Gandhi’s condition. According to sources, she was admitted due to stomach-related issues and underwent a routine medical check-up.

The hospital confirmed that her condition is stable, and she remains under observation.

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, who turned 78 in December 2024, has faced several health concerns over the years and has taken a step back from active political engagements.

Despite her health challenges, she continues to play a significant role in the Congress party.

Official Statement from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital issued a statement confirming Sonia Gandhi’s admission on Thursday at 8:30 AM. The statement read, “She underwent a routine check-up and is now stable and under observation.”

Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of the Board of Management at the hospital, stated, “She was admitted today for some abdomen-related issue. However, there is no major concern, and in all likelihood, she will be discharged by tomorrow morning.”

Ms. Gandhi is currently under the care of gastroenterology specialist Dr. Samiran Nundy.

Recent Public Appearances

Despite her health concerns, Sonia Gandhi made a significant public appearance last week during the Budget session of the Rajya Sabha on February 13.

She was actively engaged in parliamentary discussions and raised concerns about the delayed population census.

On February 10, she urged the government to expedite the census process, emphasizing that around 14 crore people are being deprived of benefits under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) due to outdated population data.

During her speech, she stated, “The National Food Security Act (NFSA), launched by the UPA government in September 2013, was a landmark initiative aimed at ensuring food and nutritional security for India’s 140 crore population.

This legislation plays a significant role in supporting millions of vulnerable households, especially during the Covid-19 crisis.”

Her remarks underscored the urgency of updating census data to ensure that food security benefits reach the intended beneficiaries.

Political Career and Recent Decisions

Sonia Gandhi has been a pivotal figure in Indian politics and has led the Congress party through significant political events.

As the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party and a Rajya Sabha member, she continues to hold a key position within the party, despite scaling back her active participation.

In the 2024 elections, she decided not to contest the Lok Sabha polls, passing the Rae Bareli constituency to her son, Rahul Gandhi, who successfully retained the seat.

Her decision marked a shift in Congress leadership, with Rahul Gandhi taking on a more prominent role.

Health Concerns and Past Hospitalizations

This is not the first time Sonia Gandhi has been hospitalized for health issues. Over the years, she has sought medical treatment both in India and abroad.

Given her age and past medical history, she has been cautious about her health while continuing to contribute to political discussions and policymaking.

Expected Discharge and Future Updates

According to hospital sources, Sonia Gandhi is likely to be discharged by Friday evening. She will continue to be under medical supervision, and further updates regarding her health will be shared as necessary.

Her supporters and party members have expressed their concern and well-wishes for her speedy recovery. As she recuperates, her presence in Parliament and future political engagements will be closely monitored.

For now, the Congress leader remains in stable condition, with doctors ensuring that she receives the best possible medical care.
