Sonia Gandhi Hospitalised at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for Stomach-Related Issues

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi on Sunday due to stomach-related issues, the hospital confirmed.

The veteran leader and Rajya Sabha MP has been kept under observation in the hospital’s gastroenterology department.

Under Observation in Delhi Hospital

A hospital statement released on Monday stated that Sonia Gandhi was admitted at 9 pm on Sunday, June 15.

The statement read, “She was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital at 9 pm yesterday (15.06.2025, Sunday), under the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology for a stomach-related issue. She is currently stable, and the doctors are closely monitoring her health.”

This marks the second time the 78-year-old leader has been hospitalised this month. She had also been to the same hospital a week earlier, on June 9, for a medical check-up, as reported by the PTI news agency.

Earlier Hospital Visit in Shimla

Before her admission in Delhi, Sonia Gandhi had visited the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) in Shimla on June 7. According to Dr Aman Chauhan, Deputy Medical Superintendent at IGMC, she had arrived for a routine check-up after experiencing minor health discomfort.

He noted that her blood pressure was slightly elevated but assured that she was stable.

Naresh Chauhan, Principal Advisor (Media) to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, also confirmed her visit to the Shimla hospital.

He said she was brought in for a routine health check-up due to minor issues and was taken back home after the examination.

Delhi Hospitalisation Follows Minor Health Issues

After her brief visit to Shimla, Sonia Gandhi was brought back to Delhi for further medical evaluation.

On Sunday evening, she was again admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for continued observation related to her stomach condition. Hospital officials have maintained that her current condition remains stable.

Congress sources indicated that her recent complaints of restlessness after her visit to Shimla prompted a closer look into her health. The leadership has maintained discretion, providing only necessary health updates to the public.

Medical History and February Admission

This is not the first time Sonia Gandhi has been hospitalised this year. In February 2025, she was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, where she was under the care of Dr Samiran Nundy, a noted specialist in gastroenterology.

She underwent routine tests and was discharged the next day after doctors ensured her condition was stable.

Public Appearance in May

Sonia Gandhi made her last public appearance on May 27, when she visited Shanti Van in Delhi to pay floral tribute to India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on his 61st death anniversary.

The event marked her only significant public presence in recent weeks.

Legal Challenges in National Herald Case

Recently, Sonia Gandhi’s name surfaced again in the ongoing National Herald case.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) named her as accused number one, and her son Rahul Gandhi as accused number two in its prosecution complaint filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The case involves allegations of a conspiracy to illegally acquire assets worth ₹2,000 crore belonging to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the parent company of the National Herald newspaper.

According to the ED, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, as the majority shareholders and beneficial owners of Young Indian (YI), are key figures in the case, along with five other individuals who were named in the complaint.

Political Impact and Ongoing Developments

While the Congress leadership has not commented on Sonia Gandhi’s hospitalisation beyond the official statements, her absence from the political scene has been noted during a time of heightened legal scrutiny and political activity.

With health concerns limiting her engagements, the party’s top leadership continues to operate in her absence, with Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders taking charge of key affairs.

The political and legal implications of the National Herald case continue to unfold as Sonia Gandhi recovers under medical supervision.
