Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena Praises Devendra Fadnavis for Gadchiroli Development Efforts
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently received unexpected praise from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), a former ally turned adversary.
Through their mouthpiece, Saamana, the Shiv Sena (UBT) editorial titled “Devabhau Abhinandan” (“Congratulations, Brother Devendra”) commended Fadnavis for his efforts to transform Gadchiroli from a Naxal-affected district into a steel manufacturing hub.
In the editorial penned by Sanjay Raut, the Sena (UBT) acknowledged Fadnavis’ political will and commitment to developing the district.
The article read, “If CM Devendra Fadnavis is working to change the identity of Gadchiroli district from a Naxal-affected district to a steel (manufacturing) district, then one should welcome it.”
Unusual Acknowledgment of Political Rivalry
This marked the first instance in five years since the Sena-BJP split that the Shiv Sena (UBT) extended praise towards Fadnavis. The editorial also subtly criticized Eknath Shinde, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, highlighting differences in their approaches to governance.
It remarked, “Earlier guardian ministers of Gadchiroli toured the districts many times and took a ride on motorcycles. But it was alleged that those visits were for serving the interests of the mining lobby.”
The Shiv Sena (UBT) emphasized that Fadnavis must ensure his development initiatives benefit the people rather than catering to vested interests.
This jibe was aimed at Shinde, who had held the role of guardian minister of Gadchiroli from 2020 to 2022.
Rekindling Relationships?
The praise comes amidst changing political dynamics in Maharashtra. In December, during the state legislature’s winter session in Nagpur, Uddhav Thackeray and Fadnavis met, breaking a prolonged period of estrangement since the Sena-BJP alliance dissolved in 2019.
This meeting prompted speculation of a potential thaw in their political rivalry.
State BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule expressed gratitude for the acknowledgment. “Today is a day of joy for us. We were waiting for good words from them,” said Bawankule. Fadnavis’ response was succinct: “Thanks.”
Focus on Gadchiroli’s Development
The Saamana editorial elaborated on the dire conditions in Gadchiroli, where Naxalism has claimed many lives.
It commended Fadnavis for initiating efforts to bring about a positive change, saying, “Now CM Fadnavis is working to change this situation, and we welcome it and congratulate him.”
Over the years, Gadchiroli has struggled with socio-economic backwardness and Naxal activity. Fadnavis’ focus has been on creating employment opportunities, building infrastructure, and curbing Naxal influence through development projects.
His recent inauguration of a steel plant in the district was highlighted as a significant milestone.
Criticism and Backhanded Compliments
While the Shiv Sena (UBT) praised Fadnavis, it maintained its critical stance against Shinde. Sanjay Raut alleged that Shinde’s tenure as guardian minister was marred by controversies involving the mining lobby.
Raut stated, “The earlier guardian minister could have done this – but instead, he appointed his agents and collected money, which only fueled Naxalism.”
The editorial’s measured tone hinted at a broader narrative of responsible governance transcending political affiliations.
Raut noted, “We have praised Devendra Fadnavis because the government has done a good job. Maharashtra is our state, and we will continue to raise important issues.”
Broader Implications for Maharashtra Politics
The rare praise for Fadnavis has stirred speculation about evolving alliances in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
The Shiv Sena (UBT)’s gesture was followed by similar commendation from NCP’s Supriya Sule, who lauded Fadnavis for his proactive approach to tackling Gadchiroli’s challenges.
Sule remarked, “Despite the government having such a huge mandate, only one person seems to be actively working, and that is Devendra Fadnavis.”
These developments hint at a potential shift towards a development-focused discourse in Maharashtra politics. However, tensions within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance remain evident, with criticisms directed at Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar.
