Arsenal Hijack Spurs’ Deal for Eberechi Eze in Bold Transfer Statement

In a dramatic turn of events, Arsenal sealed a deal for Eberechi Eze just hours before Tottenham Hotspur finally made the offer they believed would convince Crystal Palace.

A verbal agreement had existed, but Spurs never received a clear response. The reason became apparent soon enough.

Arsenal’s Quiet Agreement with Palace

While Spurs engaged in prolonged negotiations with Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish, Arsenal had already reached a principle agreement with Palace as early as Sunday morning, 10 August.

They managed to keep this secret, with the news surfacing only on Wednesday evening.

For nine days, it did not appear that Arsenal would act on the agreement. Reports suggested they wanted to sell before buying and preferred a left winger.

Interest in Eze was consistently played down. This created uncertainty around the deal, much like the rest of the summer. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy might feel misled, given the mixed signals.

Sympathy has emerged for Levy, though not without some schadenfreude. Talks with Palace had faced repeated setbacks over add-ons and upfront payments. Whenever one issue was solved, another arose, leaving the deal described as “both almost done and constantly at the point of collapse.”

Spurs’ Hopes and Eze’s Dream

Within Spurs, there is now a belief that Palace were stalling, waiting for Arsenal to return, knowing competition would raise the price. By Saturday, it seemed unlikely Arsenal would follow through, and Eze himself accepted this. He even spoke to Parish, pushing for a Spurs move.

Levy and Parish met on Monday, and Tottenham seemed to have a clear path. Eze was eager to join, though Arsenal remained his true dream.

That dream suddenly became reality on Wednesday morning, as Arsenal finally acted. This move was linked to Kai Havertz’s injury, though Arsenal hope his absence will not exceed three months. The news accelerated the deal, with Arsenal determined not to miss out.

Arsenal’s Advantage in Negotiations

Arsenal held certain advantages. Parish shares a closer relationship with Arsenal executive vice-chairman Tim Lewis than with Levy, and the two often communicate directly.

This connection helped speed up discussions, especially since the Sunday agreement already existed.

Additionally, Arsenal have more players they could offer Palace in needed positions. A deal for Jakub Kiwior remains possible, though it would be a separate transfer.

To beat Spurs, Arsenal had to pay beyond the initial structure of £50m plus £10m add-ons. The final agreement reached £60m with £7.5m in add-ons, aligning with Eze’s release clause that expired Thursday. This surpassed Tottenham’s final offer.

Parish Secures the Best Outcome

Parish played his part effectively, ensuring the best possible return for Palace despite losing one of their greatest players. Eze had just helped deliver the first major trophy in the club’s history.

Queens Park Rangers, his former club, will also benefit, receiving 15 per cent of the deal. The funds will provide QPR with financial freedom they have not had in years.

Eze chose Arsenal not just for the greater chance of trophies beyond the FA Cup, but because it fulfilled a childhood dream.

He trained with Arsenal until the age of 13, and his Instagram post after Palace’s FA Cup success included an image of Ian Wright, signalling his connection to the club.

Final Game Before Goodbye

It is not yet certain if Eze will play in the Europa Conference League play-off against Fredrikstad on Thursday. Such a game would provide a fitting farewell, allowing him to help Palace reach Europe before leaving.

Yet, sentiment aside, this is a massive financial transfer. Spurs chairman Levy now faces questions after missing out on two major signings this summer, including Morgan Gibbs-White. Fan protests may intensify.

Arsenal’s Major Summer Signing

For Arsenal, Eze represents the kind of game-changing signing many felt they needed compared to Liverpool and Manchester City.

At £67.5m including add-ons, the move ranks as one of the biggest of the summer and carries extra weight given the rivalry with Tottenham.

Spurs had been confident of finalising their agreement with Palace and personal terms with Eze on Wednesday morning.

Arsenal’s sudden intervention, accelerated by Havertz’s injury concerns, changed everything. Sources suggest Eze will still play in Thursday’s playoff, likely his last appearance for Palace.

Arsenal’s earlier hesitation was partly tied to Ethan Nwaneri’s contract situation, but with the teenager signing a new five-year deal, the club returned for Eze.

Having already spent nearly £200m this summer, they needed sales before new signings, but Havertz’s situation forced action.

Eze, 27, with two years left on his Palace contract, had been open to Spurs but grew up an Arsenal fan. Tottenham will now turn to other targets after another frustrating miss, following Gibbs-White’s decision to remain at Nottingham Forest.
