Pakistan All-Rounder Imad Wasim Announces Shocking Retirement from International Cricket
In a surprising turn of events, Pakistan’s all-rounder Imad Wasim declared his retirement from international cricket on Friday, December 13, through a heartfelt post on X.
“After much thought and reflection, I have decided to retire from international cricket. Representing Pakistan on the world stage has been the greatest honour of my life, and every moment wearing the green jersey has been unforgettable,” Imad expressed in his post.
He acknowledged the role of fans in his career, adding, “Your unwavering support, love, and passion have always been my biggest strength. From the highs to the lows, your encouragement has pushed me to give my best for our beloved country.”
Earlier in November 2023, Imad had already stepped back from international cricket after being overlooked by selectors due to fitness issues.
Despite this, he made himself available for the T20 World Cup in June, where Pakistan’s campaign ended prematurely. Imad had a lackluster performance during the tournament, securing only three wickets in three games and scoring a mere 19 runs.
Announcing his future plans, Imad stated, “While this chapter comes to an end, I look forward to continuing my journey in cricket through domestic and franchise cricket, and I hope to keep entertaining you all in new ways. Thank you for everything. Pakistan.”
Imad’s career spanned 75 T20Is, during which he amassed 554 runs and claimed 73 wickets. He also played 55 ODIs, scoring 986 runs and taking 44 wickets. His standout bowling performance remains his 5/14.
Mohammad Amir’s Second Farewell
Imad Wasim’s retirement was followed by Mohammad Amir announcing his decision to step away from international cricket, marking the second time he has done so. Amir, 32, intends to focus on domestic and franchise cricket globally.
“It has been a great honour to play for Pakistan across all three formats,” Amir shared. “I know this is a difficult decision, but I feel this is the right time for the next generation to take the baton and elevate Pakistan cricket to new heights.”
Amir had earlier retired from international cricket in December 2020 but returned to represent Pakistan in the T20 World Cup this year. His career includes 36 Tests with 119 wickets, 61 ODIs with 81 wickets, and 62 T20Is where he grabbed 71 wickets.
He reflected on his journey, stating, “I would like to thank the PCB for always extending the much-needed support over the years and I look forward to watching the team excel. I would also like to thank Pakistan fans for always supporting me throughout my career.”
Amir, who faced a five-year ban in 2010 due to a spot-fixing scandal, made a strong comeback in 2016 and played until his first retirement in 2021.
Imad’s Career Highlights and Final Chapter
Imad Wasim had previously retired in 2022, but his remarkable performances in the Pakistan Super League earned him a return to the national side.
His contributions were instrumental in Pakistan’s squad for the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, but the team struggled, exiting in the group stages.
Imad’s final appearance for Pakistan came in June 2023 during the T20 World Cup against Ireland in Lauderhill, USA. His international career began in 2015, debuting in a T20I against Zimbabwe in Lahore.
The 35-year-old spin all-rounder leaves behind a legacy marked by consistent performances and his ability to adapt to the demands of modern cricket.
Looking Ahead
Both Imad and Amir have left their mark on Pakistan cricket, their retirements signaling a shift for the next generation of cricketers.
While their journeys with the national team have ended, fans will continue to witness their talent on domestic and global franchise stages.
