IPL 2025 Eliminator: Jasprit Bumrah Castles Washington Sundar with Fiery Yorker to Give MI Crucial Breakthrough

Jasprit Bumrah produced a trademark moment of brilliance to dismiss Washington Sundar during the IPL 2025 Eliminator between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, on May 30.

Mumbai Indians found themselves in urgent need of a breakthrough, and captain Hardik Pandya turned to Bumrah in the 14th over, hoping for something special.

Sai and Sundar Power Gujarat’s Comeback

Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar were leading a strong fightback for Gujarat Titans, adding a crucial 84-run partnership for the third wicket. They countered the Mumbai bowlers with ease, regularly finding the boundaries to keep up with the challenging chase of 229 runs.

As the 13th over concluded, Gujarat were cruising at 148/2, making Bumrah’s entry in the next over a critical turning point.

A Toe-Crushing Yorker Shifts Momentum

Bumrah began the over by conceding three singles off his first three deliveries.

Then, with surgical precision, he unleashed an unplayable yorker directed at the leg stump. Washington Sundar, who attempted a flick, failed to read the delivery and missed it completely.

The ball crashed into the leg stump after passing through Sundar’s legs as he lost his balance and fell.

Bumrah’s eyes flared with intensity as he celebrated the key dismissal with a fiery send-off. Sundar walked back after an impactful 48 off 24 balls, including 5 fours and 3 sixes.

Mumbai Regain Control with Timely Strikes

At the time of Bumrah’s breakthrough, Gujarat Titans were firmly in the chase. However, in the 16th over, Richard Gleeson added to Mumbai’s advantage by removing a well-set Sai Sudharsan for 81 off 49 balls. The momentum swung back in Mumbai’s favor, putting them in control of the game.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians had set a formidable total of 228/5 after opting to bat first. Rohit Sharma anchored the innings with a classy 81 off 50 balls, while Jonny Bairstow chipped in with a valuable 47-run knock.

Bumrah the Game-Changer Yet Again

Bumrah, as he has done on countless occasions, proved once more why he is seen as a match-winner in world cricket. His ability to alter the course of the game under pressure was on full display.

That sensational 14th over not only broke a dangerous partnership but also lifted the energy in the Mumbai camp.

Bumrah conceded just four runs in that over and, more significantly, bagged the crucial wicket of Sundar.

The sight of the stumps shattered by a pinpoint yorker instantly brought back memories of his dismissal of Ollie Pope in the Vizag Test against England in 2024.

Eyes Say It All: The Silent Send-Off

On the fourth ball of the 14th over, Sundar’s attempt to open his stance and flick the leg-stump yorker failed as the ball sneaked through the gap.

Sundar was floored, both literally and figuratively, while Bumrah, without uttering a word, delivered a silent yet intense send-off — his eyes communicating the message loud and clear.

Bumrah’s Figures Reflect His Brilliance

In a game where more than 430 runs were scored, Bumrah’s bowling figures stood out. He conceded only 27 runs in his full quota of four overs, showcasing his elite control and impact.

When Gujarat Titans required 45 runs from the final three overs, Bumrah bowled the 18th, giving away just nine runs and tightening Mumbai’s grip on the match.

The final two overs were wrapped up efficiently by Trent Boult, Richard Gleeson, and Ashwani Kumar, sealing Mumbai Indians’ victory and securing their place in Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings.

The Bumrah Factor: Irreplaceable and Inevitable

As the dust settled on Mumbai’s triumph, one couldn’t help but wonder how the match might have unfolded without Bumrah’s brilliance. Even in the midst of IPL action, Bumrah remains aware of the bigger picture — India’s upcoming Test series in England.

Though he may not play all five Tests, Bumrah’s presence in even three matches could potentially shift the tide in India’s favor. Friday’s performance was a timely reminder of the sheer value he brings every time he steps onto the field.
