Shubman Gill Misses Duleep Trophy Opener for North Zone Due to Illness
India’s Test captain and T20 vice-captain, Shubman Gill, was notably absent from North Zone’s opening Duleep Trophy match against East Zone.
Although Gill had been appointed as captain, Haryana’s Ankit Kumar stepped in to lead the side instead. The mystery behind Gill’s absence created a stir, but the actual reason has now come to light.
Medical Reasons Behind Gill’s Withdrawal
Gill was forced to withdraw from the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal due to a bout of flu that kept him confined to his home in Chandigarh for several days.
Acting on medical advice, he opted out of the match to focus on recovery. His absence was a major setback for North Zone, who had counted on his leadership and consistent form in red-ball cricket.
Recovery and Return to Training
Now fully fit, the 25-year-old has resumed his training regime. Gill began fitness protocols at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru on Saturday and is expected to travel to Dubai in the coming days.
Unlike earlier years, when the Indian team travelled collectively from Mumbai, the 2025 Asia Cup squad members will join the group in Dubai in phases from their respective locations. Gill is likely to be among the first group of players departing from Bengaluru.
The Indian team is scheduled to assemble in Dubai on September 4, ahead of their first Asia Cup 2025 match against the UAE on September 9.
This tournament is of particular importance, serving as a crucial preparation platform for India before next year’s ICC Champions Trophy.
Senior Players at the Centre of Excellence
Alongside Gill, senior players Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Siraj were also spotted at the CoE, undergoing routine pre-season assessments.
Rohit, who has already retired from T20Is and Test cricket, is reportedly being considered for the ODI tour of Australia in October. However, there is still uncertainty over whether he will feature in the India A vs Australia A one-day series in Kanpur later in the same month.
Other Key Players in Camp
Jitesh Sharma, another vital part of India’s T20 setup, has also joined Gill at the CoE for his pre-tournament preparations.
Several other centrally contracted players, including Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shardul Thakur, are expected to report to the Bengaluru facility soon for fitness clearances.
Their inclusion will be significant as the team looks to fine-tune its strategy and readiness for the upcoming Asia Cup.
Importance of Gill’s Role in Upcoming Tournaments
Gill’s return to full fitness is a major relief for the Indian team management. His recent elevation to Test captain and growing responsibility as T20 vice-captain have made him one of the most pivotal figures in the squad.
With India set to face Pakistan and other strong Asian teams in the Asia Cup, his presence will be crucial for India’s campaign in the UAE.
In Gill’s absence during the Duleep Trophy, Ankit Kumar led North Zone. Initially, the reasons for Gill’s withdrawal were not clear, but it was later confirmed that he had been unwell with flu.
The setback highlighted North Zone’s reliance on Gill’s leadership and ability in the longer format of the game.
Preparation for the Asia Cup 2025
After regaining fitness, Gill has resumed light training and is working under BCCI’s supervision to ensure match readiness. He is expected to fly to Dubai soon and join the first batch of players assembling for the Asia Cup.
The official squad for the tournament was recently announced, with Gill appointed as vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel.
The Indian squad, led by Suryakumar Yadav, will assemble in Dubai on September 4. They are set to conduct several training sessions before beginning their campaign against the UAE on September 9.
The Asia Cup is expected to provide India with an opportunity to test their combinations and strategies ahead of the T20 World Cup next year.
A Crucial Tournament for India
The Asia Cup 2025 is not just another continental tournament but an important step in India’s preparations for global competitions. Gill’s fitness, form, and leadership responsibilities will play a central role in shaping India’s journey in the competition.
With high expectations on his shoulders, Gill will be keen to make a strong impact as both captain in Tests and deputy in T20s.
