Venus Williams, 45, Bows Out of U.S. Open After Spirited Battle with Karolina Muchova

At 45 years old and after a two-year absence from Grand Slam tennis, Venus Williams returned to the U.S. Open on Monday night.

She showcased her trademark big serves and powerful groundstrokes at Arthur Ashe Stadium, cheered on by a supportive crowd. However, the seven-time Grand Slam champion eventually fell to Karolina Muchova with a scoreline of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Williams became the oldest singles competitor at the hard-court major since Renee Richards in 1981.

A Slow Start but a Spirited Fightback

Williams began sluggishly, conceding 11 of the first 13 points and quickly trailing 2-0.

The atmosphere in the stadium soon shifted as fans rallied behind her with chants of “Let’s go, Venus!” Her fiancé, Andrea Preti, was seen leaping out of his seat as Williams fought back. She managed to claim three games in a row to take a 3-2 lead.

Yet Muchova regained control, capturing the next four games to secure the opening set.

Williams showed her resilience in the second set. Breaking serve at the start, she built momentum and leveled the contest at one set apiece, reviving hopes of an upset against the 29-year-old Muchova.

Muchova Proves Too Strong in the Decider

Despite Williams’ determination, the third set was dominated by Muchova, the 2023 French Open runner-up. Her consistency and physical edge proved decisive, as she closed out the match with authority.

Even so, Williams thrilled the crowd with flashes of her vintage brilliance in what was her first Grand Slam appearance in 16 months.

As she walked off Arthur Ashe Stadium, Williams waved to the fans in a prolonged farewell, leaving commentators to wonder if she would return to the U.S. Open again next year. The US Open Tennis account posted, “Always a pleasure to see Venus Williams back on a tennis court. See you again soon.”

Muchova’s Perspective

Muchova acknowledged the difficulty of facing Williams in front of such a passionate crowd. The Czech star admitted to feeling the pressure.

“I was stressed. You guys make me stressed. No, it was an unbelievable atmosphere. I mean she’s such a legend of our sport. It’s so nice to share the court with her. I’m just glad that I was lucky to win today,” Muchova said in her post-match interview.

Recent Struggles at Flushing Meadows

Williams has not won a singles match at the U.S. Open since 2019, when she advanced to the second round.

Since then, she has been unable to move past the opening round in 2020, 2022, and 2023, while missing the event entirely in 2021 and 2024 due to health and fitness issues.

Her appearance this year marked another chapter in her long journey, which included a significant break following surgery for uterine fibroids. Despite these challenges, Williams’ return highlighted her enduring passion for the game.

A Storied Career

Williams’ legacy at Flushing Meadows is undeniable. She won the U.S. Open singles title twice, in 2000 and 2001. Her other five Grand Slam singles victories came at Wimbledon, where her power and athleticism made her a dominant force on grass.

Beyond her singles achievements, Williams has also been a formidable doubles player. Teaming up with her sister Serena, she has captured 14 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles.

She has also added two mixed doubles trophies to her collection and holds a record five Olympic tennis medals. Her accomplishments helped her rise to the No. 1 spot in the WTA rankings during her career.

Beyond Tennis

Since making her professional debut in 1994, Venus Williams, along with her younger sister Serena, has transcended the sport. The sisters became cultural icons and global role models, inspiring millions with their success, resilience, and groundbreaking presence in tennis.

Serena, who captured 23 Grand Slam singles titles, played her final match at the 2022 U.S. Open. While her retirement marked the end of an era, Venus continues to compete, carrying forward their shared legacy.

Venus Williams’ performance at this year’s U.S. Open may not have resulted in victory, but it demonstrated her remarkable determination and skill, even at 45.

Facing a younger and fitter opponent in Karolina Muchova, Williams reminded the world of her fighting spirit and illustrious career. As fans applauded her lengthy goodbye, many hoped it was not the last time she graced the courts of Flushing Meadows.
