CVC Launches Probe into Alleged Irregularities in Arvind Kejriwal’s Residence Renovation

The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has launched an investigation into the renovation of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence at 6, Flagstaff Bungalow.

The probe, initiated on February 13, follows a factual report from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) that highlights potential violations of building norms.

The investigation focuses on allegations that government regulations were bypassed in constructing the mansion, which spans approximately 40,000 square yards.

Allegations of Irregularities

The CPWD report suggests that the renovations involved significant modifications that may have been in violation of existing construction norms. The key accusations include:

  • Unauthorized expansion of the property by annexing neighboring government-owned land.

  • Transforming the official residence into a large-scale mansion covering an extensive area.

  • Allegations of using public funds for extravagant renovations, raising concerns over financial mismanagement.

The bungalow served as Kejriwal’s official residence from 2015 until October 2024, when he stepped down as Chief Minister amid corruption allegations.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has repeatedly criticized Kejriwal over the renovations, referring to the residence as a “Sheesh Mahal” (Palace of Mirrors), emphasizing alleged misuse of taxpayers’ money.

BJP’s Stand on the Issue

BJP leader Vijender Gupta confirmed that the CVC took cognizance of his earlier complaints and directed a deeper probe into the matter.

The BJP has been consistently attacking Kejriwal over the issue, especially during the Delhi Assembly election campaign.

The party has accused the AAP leader of hypocrisy—stating that while he once promoted simplicity and transparency, he later moved into an ultra-luxurious bungalow.

In response to the investigation:

  • BJP leaders have urged Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to revoke the annexation of four government properties merged with the bungalow.

  • Gupta claimed that the expansion included eight Type-V flats at 45 and 47 Rajpur Road and two government bungalows (8-A and 8-B Flagstaff Road).

  • He called for restoring these properties to their original independent status and reducing the bungalow’s total area to under 10,000 square meters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Jibe

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a dig at Kejriwal’s lifestyle while addressing the Lok Sabha.

He remarked, “Kuch netaon ka focus jacuzzi par, stylish shower par rehta hai, lekin humara focus to har ghar jal pe hai” (Some leaders focus on Jacuzzis and stylish showers, while our focus is on providing water to every home).

This comment was widely interpreted as a direct attack on Kejriwal amid the ongoing controversy over his residence’s luxurious renovations.

Political Implications

The controversy surrounding the bungalow renovation played a crucial role in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, with the BJP using it as a key campaign issue.

The allegations have intensified scrutiny of AAP’s governance, with opposition leaders questioning the party’s stance on transparency and financial responsibility.

The issue has also fueled debates on the ethical obligations of elected officials.

While AAP initially rose to power on promises of honesty and austerity, the allegations surrounding Kejriwal’s residence have provided ammunition to critics who argue that the party has deviated from its founding principles.

AAP’s Response

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has yet to officially respond to the latest developments, but it has previously defended the renovations.

Party leaders have argued that the modifications were necessary for security and official purposes, dismissing BJP’s allegations as politically motivated attacks aimed at tarnishing Kejriwal’s reputation.

Next Steps in the Investigation

With the CVC formally involved, the investigation will likely proceed as follows:

  • A detailed inquiry into the financial and legal aspects of the renovations.

  • Examination of whether public funds were misused for unauthorized expansion and luxury fittings.

  • Possible legal action if any violations of construction norms or financial irregularities are confirmed.

  • A decision by the Lieutenant Governor on whether to revoke the merger of government properties with the bungalow.

The CVC probe into Kejriwal’s residence renovations has escalated political tensions between AAP and BJP. As the investigation unfolds, it is expected to shed light on the alleged violations and their implications.

The outcome of this probe could have significant consequences for Kejriwal’s political future and AAP’s credibility.

Regardless of the findings, the controversy underscores the ongoing debate about governance, accountability, and the use of public funds in Indian politics.
