Laapataa Ladies Star Nitanshi Goel Makes Stunning Cannes Debut in Black and Gold Gown

Nitanshi Goel, best known for her role as Phool Kumari in Laapataa Ladies, made her red carpet debut on Day 3 of the Cannes Film Festival 2025.

At just 17, the young actor created waves internationally with her appearance in a custom black-and-gold gown by Jade by Monica and Karishma. The ensemble not only celebrated Indian heritage but also introduced a bold aesthetic that resonated on the global stage.

An Ensemble of Heritage and Drama

The custom gown showcased exquisite craftsmanship, combining sheer black fabric with Kasab embroidery and delicate macrame work.

The base of black tulle was heavily embellished with gold floral designs, offering a dramatic contrast and visual depth.

The exaggerated hip structure echoed the sculptural art of the 18th century but carried a touch of modern opulence. With a flowing train and voluminous midsection, the gown gave off a regal and architectural flair.

The fitted bodice and strapless neckline introduced sleekness to the dramatic silhouette, infusing classic glamour with a hint of sensuality. Overall, Nitanshi’s look brought avant-garde elegance to Cannes 2025.

Minimal Styling for Maximum Impact

Nitanshi chose a minimalist approach to styling, ensuring her ensemble stood out. Her hair was neatly pulled into a sleek ponytail, and her makeup was refined with a dewy base and a gentle pop of colour on her lips.

For accessories, she selected understated yet graceful jewellery from CaratLane, striking a perfect balance. While a touch of frost on the wrist might have elevated the look further, the overall appearance remained poised and impactful.

Defying Dress Code Expectations

Cannes recently introduced a stricter dress code, but Nitanshi’s bold choice was a refreshing departure.

Her fearless fashion move proved successful, reminding everyone that the red carpet is meant for making statements—especially when a young Indian actor is leaving a mark on the international scene.

The Story Behind the Look

Monica Shah of JADE described the look as a harmonious blend of “heritage and whimsy,” inspired by “spring florals under the moonlight.”

The intricate Kasab embroidery—a form of traditional zardosi involving metallic threadwork—was brought into a modern context to honour India’s timeless craftsmanship.

In a second custom look for her Cannes appearance, Nitanshi wore a white pre-draped sari with a backless blouse and sheer dupatta, again styled by the duo Shrey and Urja.

This look featured bow embroidery and cascading floral motifs. The focal point was a unique pearl parandi by Be Abhika, adorned with black-and-white images of legendary Bollywood actresses.

A Tribute to Bollywood Icons

The custom pearl parandi paid homage to classic Bollywood actresses such as Madhubala, Nargis, Meena Kumari, Nutan, Waheeda Rehman, Asha Parekh, Vyjayanthimala, Hema Malini, Rekha, and Sridevi.

The stylist duo revealed on social media that the piece was crafted to celebrate “courageous creativity, Indian identity, and self-expression.”

Madhulika Anchalia, co-founder involved in the styling process, added that the parandi was designed within three days to honour the grace of these cinema legends while presenting them through a fresh, global lens.

Praise from Netizens and Industry

Social media erupted with praise for Nitanshi’s appearance. Fans left comments like “Ohho dekho phool khili ha,” “Beautiful girl spread her glamour and making us proud,” and “You have such remarkable talent, you truly deserve to be in many more movies.”

Netflix India chimed in, saying, “I say phool marks for this look,” under a Diet Sabya post, while others echoed similar sentiments.

A Rising Star on a Global Stage

Styled by Shrey and Urja, her show-stopping gown included a strapless neckline, a corseted bodice, and a cinched waist that flowed into a dramatic mermaid-style skirt.

The elegant train and minimal accessories—including a choker, serpentine earrings, and rings—rounded out the grand look. At Cannes, Nitanshi stood tall alongside seasoned actors, proving she was ready for the big league.

A Promising Journey Ahead

Nitanshi Goel first captured attention in Laapataa Ladies (2024), an Oscar-nominated film where she portrayed Phool Kumari alongside Sparsh Srivastava and Pratibha Ranta.

The film is currently available on Netflix. With her Cannes appearance, she not only made a strong fashion statement but also signalled a promising future in global cinema.
